Sharing both fictional and real stories with students
Philly Haefs, a tenant at Good Samaritan Society – Fairview in Arlington, Minn., visited a local elementary school to read the book Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge to students. The book shares the experiences of
a boy named Wilfrid who lives next door to an “old people’s home.” He has the important job of helping his friends there find their memories. After reading the book, Philly talked with the students about memories of her own days as a student, and she answered questions about school, her youth and living at Good Samaritan Society – Fairview.
Volunteers help offer residents 10,000 choices
When the Good Samaritan Society – Kissimmee Village Library opened in 1982, 30 volunteers helped patrons borrow from the 1,000-book collection that had been contributed by various donors. Today, 45 volunteers at the Kissimmee, Fla., campus maintain the library’s collection of nearly 10,000 regular-print, large-print and audio books, videos, CDs, DVDs, puzzles and games. The library also provides more than 70 magazines and editions of local newspapers. The library hosts a wireless Internet connection and two computers with
high-speed Internet. The low-vision room offers state-of-the-art video magnifiers for patrons. “One resident recently used the magnifiers to read a handwritten letter from her great- granddaughter, something she has struggled to do in recent years,” says Luann Foos, Kissimmee Village executive director. The library is self-supporting
through material and financial gifts from residents, and through ongoing book sales and bake sales. Last year, 3,777 hours were logged by library volunteers.
