AWRITER’S LIFE IS LIKE A JIGSAWPUZZLE CAN YOU MAKE THE PIECES FIT?

MORGAN ST. JAMES ~ LAS VEGAS NVANDMARINA DEL REY CALIFORNIA

A writer's life in active cities like Los Angeles, Chicago or New York is often filled with the challenge of trying to make the pieces fit. Add to that the bits and pieces of plots, character development, location choices, and facts that fill your head daily, and the whole thing begins to look like a big jigsaw puzzle. Rearranging and shuffling, twisting and turning, become necessary to make the fragments form a full picture.

PART 1 -YOURWRITINGLIFE

Life is generally like a jigsaw puzzle. Some pieces fit, some don’t. When you become a fiction writer this multiplies. Not only are you creating the picture of your own life and career, but that of your characters and your story lines. One wrong tab, one wrong-sized opening and it simply doesn’t fit. Don’t force it. Think logically.

AWRITER’S CHALLENGES

You have a beautiful visual image of what it will be like once the book is published. There will be the book tours, set up of course by your publisher, and the accolades from reviewers writing for the New York Times, Booklist, Kirkus and more—nothing less than the most prestigious.

HARLEY JANE KOZAK DATING SERIES

Whoops! Has something gone wrong? The pieces don’t fit. Why? Because in the general world of publishing that pipedream is no longer the norm except for big, bestselling authors at large publishing houses. In today’s environment, unless you fit that description, it will take some moving and shifting to make the piece fit.

Blog tours, author’s own blogs and podcasts are good alternatives for new or less-known authors with small or midlist houses, not to mention those who are self published. If you have the money, there are many PR people now handling exactly this. They use their expertise to make the piece fits. If you don’t have the money, since five and six figure advances are as scarce as the proverbial hen’s teeth these days, visit appropriate blogs, seek out people to review your books, check out podcasts and every place on the huge internet network where your book or interview might be seen. Where are authors who write in your genre guest blogging?
