LADDER Liana Canavan
iana Canavan recently joined CALA Homes (West) as sales and marketing director and is responsible for overseeing a portfolio of prestigious developments across central Scotland including the company’s most exclusive address in the west, Thorntonhall. Here she steps away from the company’s showhomes to showcase her own property choices.
L First property
My first property was a flat in Coatbridge. Working in property, I recognised the benefits of buying and wanted to get on the ladder as quickly as possible.
The ones that followed
I part exchanged my flat for a new build detached home in Muirhead. It meant my husband and I didn’t need to do viewings or get tied into entry dates. Part exchange made the whole process simple and straightforward.
Present property The home we are in now was taken on as a project. It’s a five bedroom bungalow in Bo’ness that we’ve extended to our own specification.
What do you look for in a property? Every time I’ve moved, I’ve looked for something different as our needs have changed. First time it was a smart pad in a handy location, the next time was the ease and convenience of a new build and finally our last home was picked with a view to creating our ideal family home.
Have you always bought as a home or as an asset? Always as a home. I believe you should never compromise your permanent living accommodation by viewing it as an asset.
In your opinion where is the most upcoming area in Glasgow? Areas like Knightswood are ideal locations where you still have the benefits of West End living without the price tag.
Tips for househunters
Have vision when looking at properties on how to make it your own. Look at the long term costs of maintaining the property and the energy efficiency aspects.
Tips for sellers
Always keep in mind that first impressions really do count so make the most of what you have and hopefully the right person will come through the door - it only takes one buyer.
