Bass Receives Distinguished Community Health Defender Award
submitted by Stephanie DuBois Members of the Bi-State Primary Care Association recently honored Congressman Charles F. Bass (NH-02) with their ‘Community Health Defender Award’ for his support of community health centers during a trip to Capitol Hill. Bass said:
“I’m honored to be recognized by the Bi-State Primary Care Association, but the Association and its members across the state are the ones most deserving of our thanks for the hard work they do in providing critical health care services to under- and
uninsured individuals and families. Community health centers play a vital role in controlling health care costs for everyone, and we’re fortunate to have more than 20 centers across the Granite State serving the needs of local communities. Having toured many of these centers and met with staff and volunteers, I will continue working to ensure Congress supports these crucial programs.” Tess Stack Kuenning, CNS, MS, RN, the Executive Director of Bi-State Primary Care Association, said, “Congressman Bass has been an avid supporter of Community Health Centers throughout his political career. Because of the affordable comprehensive quality care they provide to our most vulnerable populations across the state, Congressman Bass made them a centerpiece of his health care priorities. We are extremely grateful for his unwavering support.”
Bass has long been a supporter of community health centers as a means to reduce health care costs by providing urgent and primary care to uninsured and underinsured individuals and families. Bass signed a letter last month to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee asking the Committee to fund the Health Centers program at $3.1 billion during the Fiscal Year 2013 appropriations process. Bass is also a member of the Congressional Community Health Center Caucus. Bi-State Primary Care Association is a nonprofit organization that works with federal, state, and regional health policy organizations, foundations, and payers to develop strategies, policies, and programs that provide and support community- based primary and preventative health care services in medically under-served areas in New Hampshire and Vermont.

Enterprise Bank has announced that it is donating $25,000 to the Regional Economic Development Center of Southern New Hampshire’s (REDC) Business Training Center Tax Credit program. REDC received a Tax Credit Award from New Hampshire’s Community Development Finance Authority (CDFA), which funds community development projects through the use of tax credits for NH businesses that contribute. The donation will allow REDC to develop a business training center in southern New Hampshire, with a goal of providing a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs, existing businesses, lenders and community leaders seeking assistance to help them stimulate economic activities in their communities. “We are proud to have Enterprise Bank as a business partner in this venture. Enterprise Bank continues to be one of our strongest lending partners as we work to create jobs throughout the Region through our alternative lending programs. This funding will enable us to support growing and challenged businesses as they work to create and retain jobs as well as make our communities and the southern New Hampshire region more competitive,” said Laurel Bistany, Executive Director of REDC. The REDC provides technical assistance, strategic planning and alternative financing to 42 municipalities in Rockingham and Hillsborough counties.
“Enterprise Bank’s mission is to help create successful businesses, strong, vibrant and prosperous communities. Our mission of supporting the entrepreneurial spirit blends well with REDC’s plans to develop a business training center and the important efforts of their organization to promote job creation, broaden the tax base and improve the quality of
life in southern New Hampshire, “ said Peter Rayno, Senior Vice President and Regional Commercial Lending Manager for New Hampshire. The new business center aims to include electronic support for training sessions sponsored by area business groups, trade associations and education institutions. REDC said it will use 18 years of proven organizational leadership and project management experience to manage the Center to support emerging companies that embrace the principles of entrepreneurship and technology innovation.
In addition to partnering with bank lenders, venture capitalists and business counselors from the Small Business Development Center, REDC will also partner with the University of New Hampshire, the Green Launching Pad, and several other organizations to link technology innovators and local universities to the private sector. REDC’s goal is to shape the economic horizon by identifying and supporting emerging companies that attract and retain younger workers with high-paying jobs. The development of the REDC’s Business Training Center is supported by the NH Department of Resources and Economic Development, the Small Business Development Center, Senator Shaheen, Congressman Guinta, and the Town of Raymond.
About the Regional Economic
Development Center (REDC) REDC was established in 1994 as a non-profit economic development organization with a mission to serve new and growing businesses in Southern NH. A rich source of information for future hunts is now out from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. The newly published “2011 New Hampshire Wildlife Harvest Summary” summarizes data gathered by wildlife biologists from the various 2011 New Hampshire hunting seasons. This annual publication provides a complete breakdown of 2011 hunting season statistics, including many totals by town and Wildlife Management Unit (WMU). Statistics are provided for deer, moose, bear, turkey and furbearers. The “2011 NH Wildlife Harvest Summary” is available online at
http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/pubs/hunting.html. A limited number of print copies are available for pick-up at the NH Fish and Game Department in Concord and at Fish and Game’s regional offices in Durham, New Hampton, Lancaster and Keene. The report confirms that the total number of deer killed during the 2011 NH hunting season was 11,109. This was an increase of 14 percent from the 9,759 deer taken by hunters in NH in 2010. According to the report, recent limitations on either-sex hunting have helped speed up deer population recovery in much of the state. Of the total harvest, archery hunters took 2,787 deer; the muzzleloader kill was 2,251; and “regular” firearms hunters took 5,596 deer.
