Father Joseph L. Hamel
Father Joseph L. Hamel, 72, Maryknoll Missioner to Peru and Japan, formerly of Lawrence, MA, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2012, at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Valhalla, NY. He was a Maryknoll missioner for 51 years. Father Hamel was born on July 22, 1939, in
Lawrence, son of the late Joseph and Yvonne Hamel, in a family of 10 siblings. He attended St. Anne’s Grammar School and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1957. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Christian Religious Studies from Empire State College in New York and a master’s degree in Christian Heritage from Maryknoll Seminary, Ossining, NY, in 1985. Father Hamel first served as a Maryknoll
Brother, taking his first oath on June 29, 1959, with the religious name of Brother Pierre. He was assigned to St. Joseph’s Training Institute at Maryknoll, NY in 1959, and then went on to the Maryknoll Junior Seminary in Chesterfield, MO. Next he was assigned to the Maryknoll Japanese Mission in Los Angeles, CA, to begin his duties with parish youth. He provided pastoral work with the CYO, youth retreats, volleyball, drama coach, and was a physical education instructor. He also drove the school bus for the children and supervised maintenance for the parish. He took his Perpetual Oath on June 20, 1965. After one year of Spanish language
studies at the Maryknoll Language Institute in Cochabamba, Bolivia, Brother Pierre was assigned to Peru to teach English to high school students in the parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Lima.
In April 1974, he went to the Altiplano
of Peru to serve in the parish of St. John in Acora. He returned to the Cochabamba Language School one year later to study the Aymara language. Brother Pierre again was
assigned to Peru in 1975 for pastoral work in the parish of St. Michael in Llave and then at the Catechist
Formation Center in the town of Chucuito. He conducted an in-depth study of catechist and permanent deacon formation, visiting formation centers in Peru, Bolivia, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico and the United States.
In 1979, he was
assigned to lead the Coordinating Committee of Formation for Catechists for the Prelature of Juli, and started a mobile team for the training of local lay leaders. His experience with the Aymara people
moved Brother Pierre. He had always wanted to become a priest since he was a young child, and in 1982, he returned to the United States to begin his studies for the priesthood. After celebrating 26 years as a Maryknoll
Brother, Father Hamel was ordained a priest on June 8, 1985. He returned to his work in Peru among the Aymara people of the Altiplano, serving as pastor of Huancane Parish in the Prelature of Juli. In 1997, Father Hamel was assigned to Japan to work among Latin American immigrants.
1999, after two years of language study, Father Hamel worked in Tsu, in the diocese of Kyoto, with the Japanese Christian community and also ministered to the migrants of Mie-Ken.
