by Chris White The Salem High baseball team hosted Spaulding on opening day of the 2012 season last Monday, April 9. Trailing 3-2, the Blue Devil offense exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth en route to a 12-6 victory over the Red Raiders. The Blue Devils improved to 1-0 on the new season. Salem’s big inning was highlighted by a grand slam home run off the bat of centerfielder Joe

Dominick Gigante (1 for 3, one run scored) also tripled, while Landers and Ryan Decker (1 for 5, one run scored) doubled for Salem. Senior captain and right fielder Mike Downing also went 1 for 4 and scored a run. Pitcher Dan Peters earned the win for the Blue


Devils. Peters threw for five innings, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out two batters. Landers pitched the last two innings, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out three to shut the door on Spaulding. After traveling to Concord on Wednesday, the Blue Devils return to their home field to face arch- rival Pinkerton Academy on Friday, April 13. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.


Boys’ Tennis Tops Spaulding on Opening Day


by Chris White The Salem Blue Devils and Spaulding Red Raiders met for an opening day boys’ tennis match on Monday, April 9 at Michele Park in Salem. Salem defeated Spaulding by the score of 7-2, as the Blue Devils improved their record to 1-0 and the Raiders fell to 1-1 on the young season. Salem proved to be the stronger team in the


match, winning four out of the six singles matches and sweeping the doubles round. Salem’s top singles player, Chris Bacho, defeated Spaulding’s number one, David Turbitt, by the score of 8-4. Meanwhile, Salem’s Ryan Hatfield won the second singles match over Spaulding’s Myles Parsons, 8-2. Salem’s Connor Morisseau won a close match, 8-6, in number-three singles, while Mike Walsh came out on top of an 8-2 decision in number-five singles. Spaulding’s number four, Zach Ellis, and number six, Taylor Brown, were responsible for the two Red Raider victories in singles match play. With the overall match score at 4-2 in favor of Salem after the singles round, the Blue Devils swept doubles match play to secure the win over Spaulding. Salem’s number-one doubles team of Bacho and David San Antonio defeated Spaulding’s top doubles team, 8-4. The Blue Devils’ number-two doubles tandem of Hatfield and Morisseau took an 8-1 win, and Walsh united with teammate Jay Sahasakmontri to grab an 8-4victory for the Devils in the third doubles

by Chris White The Salem girls’ lacrosse team began the 2012 season with a 19-9 win over Nashua North at home on Tuesday, April 10. The win improved Salem’s record to 1-0 on the young season. Salem came out of the gate strong and led 10-5 at halftime. The Blue Devils continued their dominance in the second half, outscoring the Titans 9-4. Jersey Burns led Salem with six goals, while Alexa Smith led the Devils in assists with five. Burns also provided one assist, while Smith had one goal.


Also contributing to Salem’s offense were Shari


Juranovits (one goal), Janelle Borges (three goals, one assist), Megan Zuliani (four goals), Tayllar Righini (four goals, one assist), Kerri Dodier (one assist), Erika Smith (one assist), and Michayla Shay (one assist).Salem goalie Kara Thomas also had 16 saves in net. Salem’s roster sports five returning seniors this


season including Burns, Righini, Dodier, Alexa Smith, and Briana Tan. Juniors Michayla Shay and Janelle Borges, and sophomores Thomas, Juranovits, Erika Smith, and Danielle Smith also return to the varsity squad. Newcomers include Maquela Barron, Katelynn Brooks, Megan Zuliani, Sam Pare, Alex Breen, and Chantelle Dumont. Burns and Righini will be team captains. “I think our preseason has gone well and they


all played well today,” Salem lacrosse coach Faith Wahlen said of her team following the win over North. “A lot of people have come back at a higher level, which just changes the whole the game. I think everyone is just connecting and they’re enjoying it.” After hosting Bedford on Wednesday, Salem


will play its next contest on the road against Manchester Central on Wednesday, April 18. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. The team’s next home game is on Friday, April 20 against Concord at 4 p.m.


Blue Devils Begin Outdoor Track Season

After visiting Concord on Wednesday, the Blue Devils will see their next action at home against Pinkerton on Friday, April 13. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. Then they are off to Nashua to face Nashua North on Monday, April 16 and they will host Bishop Guertin back at home on Wednesday, April 18. Those matches are scheduled for 4 p.m. as well.

Double winners for Salem included Adigun and Alex Magoon. Adigun took first in the 110-meter hurdles (17.16 seconds) and the triple jump (35 feet 1 1/2 inches), and placed second in the 100 meters (11.86 seconds). Magoon placed first in the discus (94 feet 10 inches) and the javelin (155 feet 11 inches). Other winners for the Salem boys were Ben Dutton in the 3200 meters (10:14.75), Eric Tahtamoni in the 300 hurdles (43.12 seconds), and Jason Martinez in the long jump (17 feet). The boys’ 4x400-meter relay team of Rodriguez, Tahtamoni, Jordan Bowman, and Ryan Buck also took first place with a time of 3:44.13. Other placers for the Devils were Bowman taking second in the 400 meters (53.94 seconds) and third in the high jump (5 feet 4 inches), Joe Settineri taking second in the 3200 meters (10:34.79), Jason Frias taking second in the triple jump (31 feet 2 3/4 inches), Brendan Rastello taking third in the triple jump (29 feet 1 3/4 inches), Mike Gordon taking second in the shot put (37 feet 2 1/2 inches) and the discus (91 feet 9 inches), Colin Parnell taking third in the shot put (31 feet 7 inches) and the discus (86 feet 2 inches), and Connor Decker taking third in the javelin (129 feet 5 inches). The Salem girls were led by double


winner Lauren MacGregor.


MacGregor won the long jump (14 feet 6 inches) and the triple jump (32 feet 2 inches). She also finished second in the 100-meter dash (13.54 seconds) and was a member of the girls’ 4x100 team that took second place with a time of 55.99 seconds. Other Salem 4x100 members included Naisha LeFort, Crystal Peatfield, and Samantha Gauvain.


Victoria Rozumek was also an event winner for Salem. Rozumek won the high jump (5 feet 2 inches) and placed third in the triple jump (30 feet).


Also placing with second-place finishes were Alyssa Lambert in the 800 (2:27.88), Gauvain in the 100-meter hurdles (18.60 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (54.05 seconds), Olivia Burke in the high jump (5 feet) and triple jump (31 feet 2 inches), and Danielle Donovan in the javelin (89 feet 1 inch). Other third-place finishers for the Devils included Katilyn Page in the 1600 meters (6:14.19), Samantha Hutchins in the 3200 meters (12:57.35), and Peatfield in the 300 hurdles (54.51 seconds). The 4x400 team of Lambert, Peatfield, Page, and Hutchins also took third with a time of 4:32.54.
