O
n April 4th 1970, approximately 200,000 miles from Earth, the astronauts in Apollo 13 heard a “loud bang”. They initially thought they’d
hit an asteroid. In fact, one of their oxygen tanks had exploded. In order to survive the mission, the crew needed to adapt the air cleaning mechanism to remove carbon dioxide from the air.
They successfully created an apparatus they called the “mailbox” out of odds and ends, joining the cube-shaped canisters of the control module to the cylindrical canister-sockets of the lunar module. Overcoming a series of technical issues through logical thinking, teamwork and support, eventually they landed safely back on earth. We’d call that Adroit work – it’s nimble, it’s skilful and it’s ingenious under pressing conditions.
