Gel eyeliner with the look and feel of liquid? give it a whirl

I’m a huge fan of liquid eyeliner, going for

a look somewhere between Audrey Hepburn and Cleopatra. I remember watching my mom using the little pot of black liquid in the ‘70s and thinking nothing could be more fabulous than sultry cat eyes. Several years ago, a makeup artist directed me to gel eyeliners, and it’s become a part of my standard makeup routine ever since – I seriously don’t leave home without it. While I generally use a common brand available everywhere, I was eager to try a new product from a California- based company with a very unique application style.

The Product Gel Eyeliner from Cailyn

Cosmetics, Inc.; $21; www. cailyncosmetics.com. The product is cruelty-free and free of harmful substances, including petrochemicals. This product is part of a full line of makeup and body

products available from the LA-based cosmetics company, which caters to spas and salons.

The Promise

Cailyn Gel Eyeliner promises to “achieve the perfect eyeline with the bold look of a liquid eyeliner [and] the ease of application and staying power of a gel.” Once dry, the makers promise the gel will stay smudge-proof and waterproof for 24 hours.

The Test I used the gel eyeliner in brown (it comes in four shades of black, brown, green and a reddish-brown) every morning for several weeks, applying in the morning and removing in the evenings. There are

I love the packaging, which includes the brush attached directly to the lid of the gel pot. How convenient – especially since I have recently lost two (very expensive) eyeliner brushes. When the makers claim waterproof, they mean it. I generally do not have to use a separate makeup remover, but this stuff had serious staying power. It didn’t budge in the shower; however it came off very simply when I used the makeup remover provided by Cailyn. It also came off with my regular makeup cleaner. I liked the brush, but honestly would have preferred something a bit more tapered for a thinner line. My one concern with gel eyeliners is how quickly they can dry out – even when you take care to close the lid tightly. But after more than a month of use, I can say this product still remains soft and useable.
