Publisher’s Note 4 Made in PA Spring 2012

Despite popular opinion, manufacturing continues to be one of Pennsylvania’s most important wealth generators. Manufacturing is Pennsylvania's largest source of gross state product and its fourth-largest

employer. Indeed, manufacturing is crucial to the Commonwealth. So much

so, that the Pittsburgh Technology Council, Armstrong County Industrial Development Council, Catalyst Connection, and the Pennsylvania State University Electro-Optics Center partnered to revive the former ARMTECH Showcase of Industry and Technol- ogy as the new MADE in PA EXPO. The Expo is a two-day supplier forum and trade show highlighting the capabilities of manufacturing firms in Pennsylvania. “It’s easy to underestimate the impact of manufacturing on our economy,” said PTC President and CEO Audrey Russo. “Providing a forum for manufacturers to interact, gain exposure and learn best practices is crucial and much needed.” The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis said Pennsylvania had

more than 14,500 manufacturing establishments with an output of $66.3 billion. This accounted for 12.1 percent of the total gross state product. According to the Industrial Resource Center’s PAMade.org website, in 2009 Pennsylvania was the sixth-largest manufacturing state in the nation in terms of GSP. Manufacturing remains a key part of Pennsylvania's innovation infrastructure and is present in all parts of the state, from city to suburb to rural county. “Manufacturing is a source of innovation for new products and services that is leading an economic rebound and providing jobs for Pennsylvania,” Petra Mitchell, President and CEO of Catalyst Connection, said. “The MADE in PA EXPO is a wonderful opportu- nity for manufacturers to reach new customers and to make new connections that will lead to further growth and opportunities.” 4
