Chunky Move: “Connected,” April 6-7, SCPA Piper. Highly imaginative, seductive and genre-defying dance by Australia’s Chunky Move is part of the Discovery Series. This newest work explores dancers’ movements while tethered to kinetic sculptures floating above the stage.
“Freckleface Strawberry The Musical,” April 6-22, VYT. Freckleface Strawberry will do anything to get rid of her freckles, but with the help of her loveable schoolmates, she learns everyone is different. Based on the books by actress Julianne Moore.

Discovery Film Series: “Crooked Earth,” April 13, SCPA Piper. Award-winning director Sam Pillsbury screens and discusses his film, starring Temuera Morrison as a former army captain wrestling with the traditions of his Maori culture.
“Jeff Ross Roasts Phoenix,” April 13-15, SUL. Known for blistering performances at celebrity roasts honoring mega stars, including the recent “Roast of Charlie Sheen,” Ross turns his focus on Phoenix.
“Classy and Classic” piano and vocal concert, April 14, CCA. A night of music, ranging from Broadway classics to hits from the 1930s through 1990s, with pianist Marvin Goldstein and vocalist Vanessa Joy.
Discovery Series: Marrugeku: Buru, April 14, SCPA Piper. Australian dance-theater company Marrugeku’s new production inspired by the Western Australia’s Yawuru people blends hip-hop, stilt dancing and storytelling with original songs and music.
Native Trails, through April 14, SCPA. This free 10th annual event explores the rich and varied cultures of the first nations of Arizona and North America through traditional native music, dance and art.
Discovery Series: “OrigiNation: A Festival of Native Cultures,” April 14-15, SCPA. Artists of Sunday A’Fair and Native Trails present this free weekend-long event celebrating the indigenous cultures of Arizona, Australia and New Zealand. Highlights: performances of native music, song and dance; storytelling; arts and crafts market; cultural displays and photographs.
Pianist Bryan Wallick, April 15, SCPA Piper. A gold medalist at the 1997 Vladimir Horowitz International Competition for Young Pianists, Wallick is recognized as one of the great American virtuoso pianists. Keyboard in the Sky video display allows the audience to see pianists’ hands.
Sunday A’Fair, through April 15, SCPA. Free outdoor concerts by top Valley musicians, a fine arts and crafts market, fun activities for children and families and free admission to Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
Talk Cinema, April 17, SCPA. Audience members are the critics at this sneak-preview film series that screens award-winning indie and foreign films before their theatrical release.
“Motherhood,” April 17-May 6, MAC Piper. A funny, poignant musical for anyone who is, has or knows, a mom.
“Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead,” April 20-28, MCC TO. Friendship and teen angst pushed to the very limits are the adult themes presented in this unauthorized stage parody of comic book kids.
Dutch Jazz, April 22, CPSMGR. Hard-driving two- beat traditional jazz, “West Coast” style, with Dutch jazz musician Pieter Meijers backed by the 52nd Street Jazz Band.
Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott with Assad Brothers, April 22, MAC Ikeda. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma performs an evening of Latin American music with concert pianist Kathryn Stott and Brazilian-born brothers Sergio and Odair Assad.
Paco De Lucía, April 24, MAC Ikeda. Considered one of the greatest living guitarists in the world, Lucía’s flamenco style is labeled by critics as “the portrait of studied concentration and pristine perfection.”
DanceBrazil, April 26-27, SCPA Piper. Under the direction of Jelon Vieira, New York-based DanceBrazil’s unique fusion of Afro-Brazilian movement, dance and Capoeira, the martial arts dance evolved in colonial Brazil as a means of fighting enslavement.

Reunion of original members features Frank Smith on sax/flute, Joe Corral on flute, Lewis on piano and Bob Lashier on bass, with Dom Moio on drums and special guest vocalist Alice Tatum. “The Metamorphosis of Karaghiozis” puppet show, May 2-6, GAPT. Guest artist Leonidas Kassapides uses traditional Greek shadow puppets to entertain preschoolers through fourth graders.
