Maundy Thursday, more Final Vuusica concert of the season
To commemorate the Last Supper, the Maundy Thursday
Tenebrae Service will be at 7 p.m. Thu., April 5 in the Valley Unitarian Universalist Congregation (VUU), with the Rev. Earl Holt as celebrant. This service includes a communion service and there will be a prayerful remembrance of those who have died. According to the VUU, the Tenebrae is traditionally a Good Friday ritual, with a retelling of the passion story as candles are extinguished. The service ends, with no benediction, in darkness.
Buddhists meet For modern Buddhist perspectives, readings and prayers are taken
from Scripture and various UU ministers from 9 to 10 a.m. each Sunday in the
“Dalai Lama and Friends” workshop. All are invited to Room 5, in the RE building.
Singer/songwriter performs encore Singer-songwriter and three-time Outmusic award nominee Namoli
Brennet from Tucson taked the Vuusica concert stage for the second time at 7:30 p.m. Sat., April 28 in Chandler. She appears as the final act in the fifth annual concert series sponsored by the Valley Unitarian Universalist Church (VUU), previously entertaining at Vuusica in 2007. Brennet, a hardworking and prolific folk-rock performer, has independently produced and released nine CDs since 2002 on her own label, Girl’s Gotta Eat records, including her latest, “We Were Born to Rise.” Compared to a “female Tom Waits,” she’s toured the country, making stops at the San Diego Indie Music Fest, DC Pride, Chicago’s Queer is Folk Fest, Boston’s Club Passim, and hundreds of coffee shops, clubs, festivals, colleges and house concerts. Along the way she’s shared the stage with Melissa Ferrick, Jill Sobule and Michelle Shocked, and has been featured in Performing Songwriter Magazine,

The Advocate and the Chicago Free Press. “Just as Arizona has a wide variety of music available in the state,
so does Vuusica have a wonderfully diverse group of musicians performing,” explains Kellie Walker, director of music for VUU. “There’s really something for about everyone, and it’s in a great setting for the musicians, too.” Previous Vuusica concerts included singer-songwriter Peter Mayer (“Blue Boat Home”) of Minnesota, pianist, composer and arranger Ryan Marvel of Colorado and singer, songwriter and activist Holly Hear. Performers play from a large stage, and concert seating allows for about 300 music lovers. Refreshments are available for purchase before the show and during intermission. Individual tickets for the Namoli Brennet VUUSICA concert are $12
in advance or $15 at the door for adults; $8 in advance or $10 at the door for seniors and children ages 12 and under. Advance discount tickets are available on Sundays at the VUU before the concert or can be purchased online at

50-plus singles group plans spring activities
More than 50 participants took part in
Cornerstone Christian Fellowship’s first “Side B” mixer for Christian singles 50 and older, and more events are planned. “We were thrilled to see the response
from the community and the church for this group,” says Brad Wiggers, head of adult ministries. “It definitely shows a desire for a group of this kind where singles can go to activities together, have fun, make new friends and nurture meaningful relationships and healthy friendships.” The next mixer will take place from 7 to 9
p.m. Sat., April 21 in the lobby of Cornerstone Christian Fellowship, 1595 S. Alma School Rd. A $3 charge will cover the cost of coffee and dessert. Another social event will be held in May. Sunday morning gatherings will begin June 3.
“This event is a great place to get to know others who are at the same age and stage that you are,” says Carolyn Brown, one of the group’s organizers. “All Christian singles 50- plus are invited to attend. They don’t have to attend Cornerstone to participate.” Cornerstone Christian Fellowship is a
“progressive, Bible-based” church. For more information on the singles group and to RSVP for the April 21 mixer, contact Carolyn Brown at
