SL Fire Board member thankful to QCFD

Forrest Kohler is used to dealing with a host of fiscal and administrative

fire department issues as a Sun Lakes Fire District Fire Board member. But he and his wife, Shelva, traveled to the nearby Queen Creek Fire

Department and the station of Engine 411 to discuss a very personal issue: how the crew saved their son’s life. On March 5 in Queen Creek, Kohler’s son, John, was involved in a

motorcycle accident with a delivery truck near the intersection of Ellsworth and Rittenhouse roads. Queen Creek firefighters Capt. Paramedic Jeff Otter, Engineer Paramedic Bear Denogean, Paramedic Kris Gale and Firefighter Adam Halpop responded to the call. John’s injuries were quickly assessed by the crew to be life threatening, and an emergency response helicopter was requested. Faced with a variety of trauma and working against time, the QCFD crew quickly initiated life-saving emergency medical care before the helicopter landed and transported John to the Level One trauma care center at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn. Kohler says he knows the Queen Creek crew saved his son’s life. He also

knew two things from his work on the Sun Lakes Fire Board: it is rare for a victim or their family to come back to say “thank you” to the crew, and often the fire / EMS crew is eager to find out how their patient is doing. With that in mind, the Kohlers went to personally thank the involved crew

for saving John’s life. Over a kitchen table inside the firehouse, they brought them up to date on further actions taken to stabilize John in the hospital and the long road he will yet travel toward recovery.

treatments will take place at Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert medical centers, the hospitals announce.

Both studies will take place at both centers and are

seeking participants. The first study will assess a catheter that uses

infrared and ultrasound to scope out plaque in coronary arteries among patients who have had coronary artery disease. The device could help doctors tell if the plaque needs early treatment or additional monitoring to prevent a potential heart attack. Dr. Nabil Dib, director of cardiovascular research at the centers, will lead the study.

test can lead doctors to change their minds about drug treatment for heart attack patients. The test measures platelets, blood cells that help to form blood clots. This study will be led by Dr. Georges Nseir, chairman of the cardiovascular department at the centers.

Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert are two of 33

hospitals and medical centers in the San Francisco- based Dignity Health system to be involved in medical research. Participants in the study must meet select criteria.

Participation in the study is voluntary. For information, call 480-728-9979.
