100 years of connections: Chandler Chamber marks centennial Birthday celebrations, awards programs and upcoming events are on tap for the Chandler Chamber of Commerce this month

Drive, they say

The Chandler Chamber turns 100 on Fri., April 27 and celebrates its birthday at 4 p.m. that day at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, 20000 S. Maricopa Rd., Gate 3, Chandler. General admission is free, but $100 passes

are needed to drive in the six race-car and go-kart events, which include high-speed and one-minute laps, an accident-avoidance simulator and a slalom. Cake will be served with a “Happy Birthday” sing-along. Pass- buyers get a chance to win two round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines.

Check shoebox for old photos For once, older is better. To mark its

centennial, the Chamber wants to see members’ photos of old businesses. Sepia-tone, color, black-and-white and instamatic prints are welcome, plus members’ photos of their own businesses. Include the year the company was founded. The photos will be on display starting 4 p.m. Fri., April 27 for the 100-year celebration at the Bondurant racing school.

Chamber hosts national awards program The Chandler Chamber will again host the

national Alfred P. Sloan Workplace Flexibility program awards. Applications for the national 2012 awards are online at www.whenworkworks.org and deadline to apply is Mon., April 16. The award recognizes employers and

worksites of all sizes and types across the country that are using flexibility as a strategy to increase workplace effectiveness and enhance business and employee success. Some of the issues that the workplace

flexibility program addresses are changes in workplace initiatives and the newest movements towards merging commerce and flexibility to establish a more competitive work environment, meeting growing environmental concerns, improving health and wellness in the workplace, and attracting and sustaining the vital multi- generational workforce of tomorrow. This is the seventh year in a row Chandler has been picked as host chamber.

Gen Y’s, millennials: Mysteries solved “Gen Y/Millennials: Who Are These

People?” is the topic of the Chandler Chamber Women’s Council Meeting, 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tue., May 1 at the Chandler Chamber offices. Linda Thompson of Life Path Solutions will explore how to communicate and work with Gen Y’s, born 1977 to 1990, and millennials, born 1991 and still coming. While the two are often lumped together, she says they each have their own individual characteristics. “Born after the Internet took over our

lives, television with no color, phones connected to walls and airports without security guards are read about in history books,” she explains. “The most ‘connected’ generations ever, they have little time for

snail mail, books, magazines and newspapers. They are very socially and environmentally conscious, and truly believe in the concept of giving back.” The event is free and door prizes will be

awarded.

Clean Elections up for discussion Todd Lang, executive director of the

Clean Elections Commission, speaks at 8 a.m. Fri., April 13 at the Chamber’s public policy meeting. Register with the Chamber online for this free event.

Business of golf is networking business The Chamber’s new networking program, “Business of Business Golf,” tees off at 6:30 a.m. Wed., April 18 at the Lone Tree Golf Club, 6262 S. Mountain Blvd., east of Gilbert Road on Riggs Road. The network will meet twice a month to

play nine holes, followed by breakfast and networking. The $29 cost includes the golf game, cart and breakfast. “We will be playing at different Chamber member golf courses each month and the intention is to meet new business associates, build relationships that will lead to future business,” says event organizer Brad Ness. “You may also bring a customer, a staff member or a potential customer to relax and get to know each other better.” Croffoot Heating & Air Conditioning sponsors this event.

Technology Corner “Find and manage customers” is the

subject of this Microsoft Office “Tips and Tricks” event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thu., April 12, at the Chamber and shows how technology can help throughout the customer life cycle. Ryan McCaigue of Catalyst Computer

Technologies discusses subjects from finding new customers with do-it-yourself (DIY) marketing to improving sales performance to building customer loyalty. The event is $5 for members, $10 for nonmembers and includes a deli-style lunch. A drawing will be held for a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and for a copy of Office Professional 2010. Microsoft and Verizon Wireless are sponsoring the event. RSVP at the Chamber website.
