April 7 – 20, 2012 April Centennial events With the City of Chandler’s 100th birthday celebration only
weeks away, the month of April features events honoring the history and heritage of the community and many others with free family entertainment and activities. The organizers of all these events applied for and received the Official Centennial Event designation from the Centennial Steering Committee. Two events Sat., April 28 at the San Marcos Golf Resort, 1
N. San Marcos Pl. in downtown Chandler, recognize many of Chandler’s outstanding citizens who laid the groundwork and foundations of the community. The first of these events is the Chandler Historical Society’s 28th Annual Pioneer Luncheon,
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It honors the many contributions of Chandler’s founding families at the San Marcos Golf Resort Pavilion. For more information, visit

Association’s All-Class and Retiree Reunion from 6 to 10 p.m. It will include a band and dancing, hors d’oeuvres, recognition of school personnel, a slide show of previous reunions, raffle drawings and reminiscing with former classmates. Expo helps prevent child abuse A quilt with 70 squares representing the 70
Arizona children who died from child abuse in 2010 and pinwheels for the 87,053 Arizona births in 2011 will be on display from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat., April 7 at the National Child Abuse Prevention Month kickoff Expo to raise awareness for child abuse prevention. The free public expo takes place at Tumbleweed Park at 745 E. Germann Rd. in Chandler. Families can hear dignitaries’ comments,
attend seminars, visit booths and see static displays of fire trucks, ambulances, a mobile command unit, an AZ National Guard Hummer and a helicopter. Kids also can enjoy a bounce house, dunk tank, crafts and an art area hosted by Free Arts of Arizona. A children’s choir will also perform. For details, contact the Child Abuse

Chapter of the Maintenance Superintendents Association (MSA), was at the Town of Gilbert Maintenance Yard. It gives street maintenance employees from around the Valley an opportunity to compete against each other and enjoy the camaraderie from working in a specialized field.
A number of Chandler employees finished
in the top three in their events. First place finishes went to the Asphalt Crew with Corey Hillman, Mike VanSlambrouck, Mariano Robles
and Troy Pekoske; and the Front-End Loader operator Steve Eacret. Those earning second place include the Concrete Crew with James Kessler, Jacob Granillo and Jose Matus; the Forklift operator John Cones; the Golf Cart Derby with Josh Wagner and Tim Wakefield. A third place win was earned by Master Equipment Operator Adrian “AJ” Lara. In addition, Chandler Transportation and Development Director R. J. Zeder was recognized for his
support of the event and presented with an MSA logo belt buckle. East Valley Fresh Start hosts its third annual “Friendraiser and Fundraiser” breakfast from 7:30
to 9 a.m. Thu., April 12 at The Buttes, 2000 W. Westcourt Wy., Tempe. The event is held to update the community and Fresh Start’s supporters about the progress made over the past year at the East Valley site, and to serve as a fundraiser to improve and expand services to women in the East Valley which include legal, career, social work and self esteem programs among others.
