New device opens arteries
A newly approved medical device to open narrowed coronary arteries, even in heart disease patients with diabetes, is being used for one of the first times in Arizona by Chandler Regional Medical Center. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the Resolute Integrity Drug-Eluting Stent (DES) from Medtronic. “The DES represents a significant advance in the interventional treatment of coronary artery disease,” says Patty White, president and CEO of Chandler Regional Medical Center. “The device’s indication for CAD patients with diabetes in particular really distinguishes it from the alternatives.” Historically, it has been difficult to treat
CAD patients with diabetes because they tend to have smaller coronary arteries and persistently elevated blood-sugar levels, which can increase the rate of procedural complications and long-term safety risks. Caused by a buildup of fatty deposits, or plaque, in coronary arteries, CAD is the most common type of heart disease and the leading cause of death in the United States, killing almost half a million Americans each year. Research shows that people with diabetes have a two- to three-fold increased risk for CAD and two- to four-fold higher CAD morbidity and mortality rates. Learn more information at

for centennials The Girl Scouts of the USA turns 100 this month, along with the City of Chandler. This milestone prompted members of Chandler’s Brownie Troop 951 to plant a mesquite tree at Veterans Oasis Park in Chandler. Troop members, the majority of whom

are second graders at Haley Elementary in Chandler, took part in the Arizona Centennial Tree Project sponsored by the Arizona Community Tree Council and the Girl Scouts – Arizona Cactus-Pine Council. The Tree Council donated 100 trees for the Scouts to plant across the state this month, each one commemorated with a special plaque celebrating the Scouts’ centennial. The troop worked closely with staff at the park’s Environmental Education Center and also completed service projects, picking up trash and fishing line from the lake and making luminarias for the holidays.
