I bought one of his albums ‘Deep Blue’ that night and immedi- ately became a great fan of his.
A woman cal led ‘Debs Earl’ who is now a good friend, is a local promoter running ‘Folk in the Barn’. She books some amazing Folk & Roots acts. When I was 14, before I knew her, I saw she was put- ting on a gig and the ar t i s t she booked was Mar t yn. I asked over ‘MySpace’ if there was any possibility I could open for him or maybe do a slot in the middle, thinking it was a slim chance. But, before I knew it I found myself in the wings of The Whitstable, Playhouse The- atre having ‘Martyn Joseph’ introducing me, it all seemed a bit surreal.
Since then, Debs has been so supportive getting me many good gigs, opening for some great ar tists. I have al so done a lot more wi th Mar tyn, including some more opening slots and workshops with him.
I found myself getting more and more involved in the Folk & Roots scene which is great because the crowds, the venues and the other artists were incredible.
Me and my Dad booked tickets for one of Deb’s ‘Folk in the Barn’ gigs to go and see Mar tyn play with a man cal led Steve Knightley, from the Roots band ‘Show of Hands’. At this time I hadn’t heard of Steve. The gig consisted of the two of them accompanying one another on each others songs and it was great!
After the gig Debs grabbed me and got me to sing one of my songs to Steve. He sat there and listened as I felt like I was interrupting his ‘after show meal’. Once I had finished my song he was very complimentary and asked my age. From then on Steve has been very supportive and has got me some of my best gigs and he still helps whenever he can.
I am now 17 years old and am sti l l gigging regularly, writing songs and hoping to make music my career. Over the years I have done my fair share of pub gigs, playing in front of three people, these being , the Organiser, Soundman and my Dad.
2012 wi l l hopeful ly be my best year yet. I have recently been signed to Mar tyn Joseph’s label and wi l l be working wi th him and hi s promoter, Nikki Woodhead from ‘Imageacoustic’. I wi ll be recording my first full album in April with Mar tyn who wi ll be producing and recording it al l . The plan is to then go on a tour with him at the end of the year, being the opening act for the majority of his shows, which wi l l introduce me to some great crowds and venues.
