Its stadium seats more than 1,000 people, has locker rooms for both teams, a press box and public address system. “It’s very formal, just like you see it on TV when the World Cup played,” he said. “It’s all professionally done by standards, and they met all those requirements.”

The Monsoon isn’t the only soccer organization to “Their openness and willingness to support us was

proximity to Mexico and the influence the sport has — it transcends borders. I think we’re the only country in the world that isn’t completely fanatical about soccer, until recently.”

This is the Monsoon’s first season as an outdoor soccer team. Most of the players have played both semi- professionally and at local colleges. “We recognized there’s a potential for growth, and these players have really interesting backgrounds,” Gago said. “They really have been playing here for a long time, and now they’re starting to get recognized in the cities as their local soccer superstars.”

Introducing the sport to the community could also help

pave the way for Major League Soccer for the future, Gago said.

“MLS is looking to expand and wants to put a professional soccer team in Phoenix, because it’s the sixth largest sports market in the country,” he said. “The logistics have prevented them from doing that, and we’re trying to bring that community support to the Monsoons as the leader in the soccer pro sports team here in Phoenix so we can do that three to five years down the road.” Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, and can be purchased online at www.phoenixmonsoon.com or at the game.

named for state lawmaker The new Civil Air Patrol Squadron facility at the Glendale Municipal Airport has been named in honor of a state lawmaker from Glendale. During a ceremony on Monday the facility was named the Jerry Weiers Education Center. Weiers, a Republican, represents District 12 in the Arizona House of Representatives. Peter Mountain, a CAP captain, said the center has opened because of 12 years of hard work by Weiers, who was first elected to the Legislature in 2004.
