UPS has 102,000 drivers in the nation, 1,491 in Arizona, who travel a combined more than 3 billion miles a year. Of those active UPS drivers,

5,842 are in the company’s Circle of Honor, 66 of whom are from Arizona. Collectively, the Circle of Honor

drivers have racked up 161,746 years and more than 5.3 billion miles of accident-free driving. The Arizona Circle of Honor drivers have accumulated 1,903 years of accident-free driving. Information provided by UPS

on Valentine’s Day 1984, he began driving a UPS package car. “I really like people, I like serving and I get along well with people, and I love to drive,” he said of why the job was for him. “And the wages were good, so I just stayed with it.” Twenty-eight years later, he is still staying with it, having spent 7½ years driving a package car in Fountain Hills and 21 operating a big rig in the company’s feeder department, currently driving a local route based at the UPS yard at 3150 N. 31st Ave. in Phoenix. “I’ve had shifts that start on every

hour, half-hour and quarter-hour mark on a 24-hour clock,” Warren said. In other words, whether it was 11:15 p.m. or 2 a.m., Warren has been there and done that. Currently he starts his day off at 5:30 in the morning. “It’s important to get good sleep, especially when you’re running the goofy hours some of our guys run,” Warren said. “Our mechanics are the best; they make sure we go out on the road with good, quality equipment every day.”

WADDELL UPS DRIVER BOBBY WARREN does a quick maintenance check on his feeder truck before leaving for deliveries in Phoenix March 20.

Warren — who was born on Luke Air Force Base — has been involved in only two “accidents.”

“Being in a congested yard with a lot of trailers, if you back into something and damage it, the slightest incident is considered an accident,” Baxter said. Both of Warren’s accidents were just the sort Baxter described. In his first year on the job, Warren

dual wheels. “Kid, it’s a $6 light and I’m a millionaire, don’t worry about it,” the homeowner told him. “Yeah, but I broke something, so I

was backing out of a private home’s driveway in Fountain Hills when he saw what looked like a weed, he recalled. Turns out, a Malibu light was just on the other side and it got stuck between his

have to report it,” Warren replied. When a UPS driver gets into an accident anytime during his first five years of driving for the company, he goes back down to zero years of accumulated safe driving. After five years of accident-free driving, an accident just reduces one year off the driver’s accumulated years. So Warren’s second accident —

while backing up, rubber on the side of his big rig came in contact with a parked van, leaving a rubber mark, he said — just took him back one year, hence approaching 26 years of accident-free driving in his 28th year as a UPS driver. “Congratulations to Bobby on his

achievement,” said Baxter, who went to high school with Warren. “It’s a milestone in his career. As long as he continues using the Five Seeing Habits, I’m sure he’ll achieve even more years.”
