submitted by Dave Walker What’s the result of combining great music, great talent, and a strong sense of American pride? You get the 15th annual Cabaret show “Made in America” presented by the Alvirne High School Music Department on March 31 and April 1. Audiences were treated to a musical extravaganza that provided an aural and visual treat to delight all ages in attendance. Every year since its inception, the AHS Cabaret has been a must-see event that showcases the exceptional programs under the direction of Mr. Gerry Bastien, District Music Coordinator, and Mrs. Elizabeth Beaton, Choral Director. This show is the highlight of the year for AHS music students. With 53 tables at each show for a total of 1,590 guests, all the hard work and preparation paid off again this year with all three weekend shows being sold out.

Symphonic Band, B Naturals, and Jazz Band, the “Made in America” theme came through loud and clear. Selections ranged from old and new music, traditional classics, common themes of Americana, and glimpses into our country’s history as told through the instruments and voices of the AHS student musicians. The Steckevicz gymnasium
was transformed into a patriotic cabaret hall with decorations and artistic images of our country’s heritage. After an energetic introduction by
returning Master of Ceremonies, Joe Kasper, the Alvirne Singers got the show off to an inspiring start with their spirited rendition of “America” from Neil Diamond’s “The Jazz Singer” as historical images flashed across the two Jumbotron screens. Other show highlights included the Jazz Band’s rendition of the “Route 66” television show featuring several talented soloists, an upbeat Gershwin melody by the Symphonic Band, a trip down memory lane with the Concert Band’s medley of “Hollywood Milestones,” two separate Michael Jackson tributes by the Alvirne Singers and B Naturals, and a great Buddy Rich number titled “Big Swing Face” by the Jazz Band. Bastien, the master of surprises and
extravaganza had the entire 180-member Concert Band gathered on the stage for the show’s big finale, delivering a rousing rendition of “The Stars and Stripes Forever” complete with confetti cannons, the unfurling of a huge American flag, and the audience waving red, white, and blue glow sticks in time with the music. It provided an exclamation point on a great performance of music, singing, and all-around fun that the AHS music program was proud to deliver. Cabaret is the culmination of 10 months of hard

In addition to the students and directors, the many FOM volunteers really are a key part of the success of this venture. Countless hours are put in without second thought. The result: over the past 15 years, more than 20,000 people have enjoyed Cabaret, with more to follow. Stay tuned for Cabaret 16!
