Revolution The

Gareth Frankland - CEO of acdc talks to A1 Lighting about the technology that is LED.

It is widely recognised that LEDs represent a game changing technology within the lighting industry. Whilst early LED lighting developments focused on relatively low output product applications, technological improvements in LEDs have enabled forward thinking manufacturers to develop products for a much broader range of applications.

LEDs can now be used as genuine equivalents to traditional light sources, delivering performance and power comparable to 50 Watt Halogens and even 35 Watt Metal Halides. They are an energy efficient light source, significantly improving in performance year on year. Indeed, current volume available LED efficiency is around 110 lumens per watt in 3000K. Equally as exciting is the fact that, in lab conditions, efficiencies of over 200 lumens per watt have already been achieved. The reality, however, is that LEDs are already a very efficient source now, with well

designed LED products boasting a lifetime in excess of 50,000 hours to 70% lumen maintenance, giving designers a new creative freedom to utilise lighting in some pretty hard to reach installations.

In the past, LED whites may have been cool or even grey in appearance, whereas today, high quality LED sources are delivering colour rendering and warmth of colour. This, coupled with the incredible amount of light LEDs produce from a very small source, now afford product and lighting designers alike the opportunity to design products never previously conceivable, even for bespoke, individual project based solutions.

It is hardly surprising that lighting designers are turning to LED as their preferred lighting solution for many of the worlds’ most prestigious lighting

projects. With this focus on the changing trends in LED technology, seeing how different manufacturing companies are adapting to the LED challenge is proving very interesting indeed.

Right now, the nimble, quick to market companies with the flexibility to give customers what they want internationally are well placed to maximise the huge growth in the LED market over the coming years.

It won't necessarily be easy, but companies like acdc have an opportunity to challenge some historically strong brands and reshape the future of our industry with product designs and solutions that were never previously conceivable.
