Frandsen Q&A

Finding Frandsen…

Frandsen Project, one third of innovative lighting team The Frandsen Group, is fast becoming a name to watch out for. We chat to Director Thomas Hansen to get more of a feel for the company.

A1: The Frandsen Group has been running for over 40 years,

what do you think has been the secret to your longevity? Thomas Hansen: It is no secret really; Frandsen Group has three divisions operating on different business platforms, and people working across these platforms. This means that the knowhow and experience flows freely, and we have been able to use this progressively to create an international design house with a creativity and company culture at the cutting edge of the design industry. At the same time, we have always been given the freedom to explore new territory and create products, projects and ideas without any restriction other than embracing the Danish tradition of craftsmanship. This means we have been able to diversify and refocus quickly and thus grow continually in a difficult market economy. Frandsen Project is the hospitality and contract division, which was established as an exclusive brand 13 years ago.

A1: You've worked on some great A1: What has been the biggest challenge

for Frandsen Project to date? TH: The first 12 months of the credit crisis presented us with some very unknown challenges, and we had to re-focus and rapidly adjust our business structure and market focus. We managed to do this within just a few months, and as of today we stand stronger and better positioned than ever.

projects in the past, which has been your favourite? TH: Without a doubt it’s W Paris Opera. The extremely creative and skilled designers at Rockwell Group Europe chose to involve Frandsen Project in the development and engineering of the complete lighting solutions at the very beginning of the project, making this our longest running project ever. The mere scale of the custom lighting demanded a very different approach to transforming the ideas and designs into a decorative lighting solution. It was hard and frustrating at times, but that makes it so much more satisfying to see the amazing result. It is an astonishing hotel design implementation.

Frandsen Project? TH: We constantly evaluate and evolve in a direction towards strengthening our position as a one-stop lighting supplier in the hospitality industry. However, we have other plans on the table as well; we see a growing demand for our products from retailers. So who knows, we might take a plunge into retail as well...
