significant pressure off other areas of security, for example by guaranteeing that intruders won't get in undetected they can allow users to cut expenditure on security guards without compromising protection levels.

Are there any types of fencing that you find yourselves replacing on a regular basis – is any fence type now obsolete/unsuitable but still common? If the purpose of the fence is to keep intruders out, then the majority of ‘common’ fence types on their own are not fit for purpose. Look at any fence – chain link, palisade, weld-mesh etc - and ask yourself how long it would take you to get through it, with a few easily available tools. Now remember that criminals are often very capable and determined. But rather than replacing these fences it is often possible to upgrade and ‘strengthen’ them with either acoustic detection cable systems or electrification systems to deter attacks completely. Ironically, in the cases where we have been called in to

replace fencing completely it has been for poorly designed electronic systems which were either not installed properly in the first place or which had weak components that failed in use. Our advice to risk managers is to make sure that the perimeter solution you choose has been independently tested in the most rigorous conditions and is really fit for purpose. Electric security fences have the advantage that they are a

physical and psychological barrier that hits back and, providing they are kept clear of vegetation and debris and are properly maintained as installed, they will not false alarm. The most important point is that when there is an

alarm it will mean the perimeter is being attacked and it is therefore vital to have a planned response in place to provide the appropriate security.

Any predictions for the future? Electrified barrier systems will continue moving into mainstream use because they are proving that they work where other measures don’t. The fact is that criminals can overcome conventional, non-electrified perimeters with modern tools and a bit of determination. Electrified systems provide a neat, affordable and immediate solution to this problem. Users are typically commercial organisations with

higher value goods to protect such as warehouses, vehicle compounds and major corporate sites; in addition utilities, critical infrastructure sites and government users often specify electrified systems. Although criminals may be getting more determined,

the good news is that electrified and electronic perimeter barriers are affordable and very effective - and when compared with other high security measures such as fence toppings, razor wire, spikes, they are relatively inobtrusive and don't send an unwanted message that 'this is a high crime area'. For these reasons we believe that the market will continue to grow rapidly and that many more risk managers will see electrified and electronic perimeter solutions as desirable.
