It has been impossible to escape the news that the coalition Government intends to introduce full marriage equality for same-sex couples, proposing to allow them to hold civil marriage ceremonies on secular premises. Despite the fact that the Government is not proposing to make it compulsory that any religious group hold such ceremonies on their premises, the Catholic Church has been particularly outspoken on the subject. Scotland’s Cardinal Keith O’Brien described the plans as “grotesque”, while the Archbishops of Westminster and Southwark jointly wrote a public letter saying that it was the “duty” of all Catholics to oppose such plans: “A change in the law would gradually and inevitably transform society’s understanding of the purpose of marriage. It would reduce it just to the commitment of the two people involved. There would be no recognition of the complementarity of male and female or that marriage is intended for the procreation and education of children.” Kudos goes to the Government for sticking to its guns on this issue, and to Equalities Minister Lynn Featherstone for pointing out that marriage is not “owned” by the church. “Some believe the Government has no right to change [marriage] at all,” she told The Telegraph. “They want to leave tradition alone. I want to challenge that view — it is the Government’s fundamental job to reflect society and to shape the future, not stay silent where it has the power to act and change things for the better.” Polls have indicated that most people in the UK are in favour of gay marriage (65% according to a recent Populus poll). Gay marriage is already the norm in such countries as South Africa, Sweden and Belgium – even, interestingly, in Mexico and Spain, which have a far higher concentration of Catholics than the UK. The Government is currently seeking views and opinions from people on the subject of same-sex civil marriage. If you want to give them your opinion, go to
http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk and search under ‘Equal civil marriage consultation’. The consultation period closes on 14 June 2012.
