MAC Swimmers Dominate at State Level M


AC Swimmers Jonathan Westlake and Beau Lonnquist captured indi- vidual titles at the 10 & under Oregon Swimming Short Course Championship in Springfield in February. Westlake won the 9-year-old 100 breaststroke and placed second in the 200 IM, despite missing day one of the meet due to illness.


Lonnquist competed in the 8-and- under age group and finished with some of the fastest swims ever from a MAC athlete in his age group.

The meet featured 17 MAC athletes competing in relays and individual events. The 8-and-under girls relay team of Tory Schnebly, Scout Jacobs, Claire Cooney and Karli Lonnquist swam two relays, and finished seventh in both. Schnebly and Karli Lonnquist were two of four 7 year olds to compete in the championships. Cameron Chen and Matthias Kreutzer were the other 7 year olds. Kreutzer finished with top-10 times in the 50 fly and back, the 25 fly and the 25 backstroke. Overall MAC athletes finished with best times in nearly all their swims. It marked the last 10 & Under Short Course Championships for Kevin Keil, Hannah Cooney, Reid Chen and Grant Holstrom.


MAC 13-14 Boys Set Records


Tristian Furnary, Bailey Pearson, Grant Gooding, Garen Marter and Tyler Soo


came together to win five relays, and scored serious points for a MAC team thin in other age groups at the Oregon Swimming 11-14 Championships in Corvallis, Feb. 23-26. Furnary won high point for the meet with individual wins in the 200 back, 200 IM, 50 free, 100 back, and the 100 free. He also placed third in the 200 free behind teammate Bailey Pearson who won the event with a 1:44.50. Pearson won three other events, the 200 Free, taking individual wins in the 500 Free, 1,000 Free, 1,650 and third place finishes in the 200 back and 400 IM. Soo, Gooding, Marter and Liam O’Shea each helped secure the team’s sixth place finish overall. Younger swimmers Van Mathias and


Ashley Williams experienced strong swims. Van placed top three in all of his races. Williams scored points with a fifth place finish in the 200 IM and sixth in the 100 Fly.


Furnary, Pearson, Gooding and Soo set the 13-14 boys state record in the 200 and 400 medley relay.


MAC Junior Swim Championships


The MAC Competitive Swim Team Junior Swim Championship is on Saturday, May 12. This event is open to all MAC juniors members. Registration forms can be found at the West Pool and 50-Meter Pool. Call Spencer Crum with questions at 503-517-7504.

Masters Swimmers Set National and World Records


AC Masters rang out 2011 on a high note and rang in 2012 by swimming in two events in January. The group is also proud of triathlete Lauren Binder, who trains for triathlons with the masters swimmers. Binder was nominated for MAC’s Joe Loprinzi Inspirational Award at the annual Banquet of Champions.


M National and World Records 2011 was a stellar year for four MAC Masters swimmers who set five National and


World Records on relay teams. Jill Asch, Ellen Ferguson, Eric Wan and Brent Washburne, along with other swimmers in Oregon Masters Swimming (OMS), set records at two meets last year.


At the Gil Young Memorial Meet in July 2011, three World Records were set: Asch swam on the Womens 160-199 400 LC Meter Medley Relay for a time of 5:06.15; Wan swam on the Mixed 240-279 400 LC Meter Free Relay for a time of 4:44.50; and Wan and Washburne swam on the Mens 240-279 400 LC Meter Free Relay for a time of 4:22.16 At the MAC SCM meet on Oct. 16, 2011, two National records were set: Ferguson swam


on the Women 240-279 200 SC Meter Free Relay for a time of 2:13.64; and Ferguson also swam on the Women 240-279 200 SC Meter Medley Relay for a time of 2:32.04 WM
