Handball Players Go for the Gravy
orty-six hunter-gatherers descended upon handball courts 1-5 in a quest for a gobbler at the Turkey Tournament Nov. 14-18. Along with the cadre of veteran hunters there were several rookie players in the mix, as well as a host of opportun- ists that hadn’t been seen on the courts since the last time a turkey was at stake. Tournament directors Rocky Benevento and Dean Duncan divided the doubles teams into three skill divisions – Gravy, Cranberry and Drumstick – to establish the hunting grounds for this anticipated annual event. After the customary grousing about the partner assignment, the draw and the injus- tice in the world, players got fired up for some of the best handball action of the year. In the Open Division (aka Drumsticks) final, the crowd was treated to a high velocity shootout between the brothers of Steele – Sean and Matt – versus the team of veteran gunslinger Steve Grow and the reigning Pacific Northwest Regional champion Aaron ‘The Machine’ Garner, which prevailed. In attendance along with the contestants were the wives, husbands, sons, daughters, in-laws, toddlers and infants, adding to the festivities and the decibel level. By closing time, one thou- sand pounds of turkey had been dispensed to the weary participants after three memorable days of competition and cama- raderie on the handball mezzanine. In the Gravy Division, team Austin Biddle and the late Rocky Benevento bested the competition. In the Cranberry Division the combination of Bob Evenson and Rudy Eissinger proved to be the Top Turkey. Thanks to Dean, John Van Gorder, Robin Franklin and all of the organizers. WM
