Second Saturday Rides Start Easy, Get Harder

T

his month’s Second Saturday ride is April 14 on the lovely roads around Champoeg Park. For those who missed the March ride, Champoeg Park is a great way to start the season. The views are pretty, and the terrain is mostly flat with some easy rolling sections on lightly trav- eled roads south of Portland. It’s a great way to give those winter cycling legs a chance to start moving again. The planned long route is about 30 miles and there is a shorter route of 20 miles. Meet at the Oak Grove picnic area in Champoeg Park (expect a parking fee). The Wednesday evening rides are

underway. The first several rides start from the clubhouse and travel into the hills around MAC. As the days get longer, the rides alternate between Sauvie Island and hilly rides beginning at Northwest Skyline and Germantown Road. Member Coach Shari White has some new rides planned for 2012.

The annual Monster Cookie ride is

Sunday, April 29. This organized ride is a very popular event starting and ending at the Capitol Building in Salem and traveling up to Champoeg Park for lunch. The ride is aptly named since all the rest areas have crates of cookies (and other, more nutritious snacks) for participants. It is a great ride for any fitness level. There are at least two ride distances: 20 and 65 miles. Since it is primarily an out-and- back course, riders can always turn around and head back before getting too tired.

MAC Cycling Information Resources

MAC and the Cycling Committee have two great web resources – the MAC website and the MAC Yahoo cycling website.

The Cycling section of theMAC.com has links to ride maps and is available only to MAC members. The Cycling Committee has its own web page through this service. Rides listed include the Second Saturday and Wednesday rides, committee members and contact informa- tion, plus forms for developmental and championship funding.

Join the MAC Cycling group on Yahoo to learn about club rides and to receive any last minute changes regarding rides. Maps for the rides, and many other local rides, are stored on the Yahoo group site. There are also GPS files for those with Garmin units wanting turn directions for their rides. http://sports.groups.yahoo. com/group/MACCycling/ The Yahoo page also has maps from past Second Saturday rides, coaching information from the 1988 U.S. Olympic Coach, bike fit advice, tips for bike main- tenance, a ride prep list and photos. The Yahoo group also hosts the email list the Cycling Committee uses to communicate with MAC members about upcoming rides, events or changes to any of the rides. The Yahoo group is open to MAC members and their invited guests. For information about MAC’s programs, contact Sarah Burchard of Athletic Services at sburchard@themac. com or 503-223-8740.
