Wine and spirits expert Hoke Harden, who previously guided members through a cognac tasting, is back at the club Thursday, May 3 to host a tasting of six premium blue agave tequilas.
Tequila Time I
f tequila invokes images of a bottle, a saltshaker, a lime and a hangover – this event is just what the doctor ordered. Cinco de Mayo is fast approaching and with it, tequila time. It’s time to learn the difference between reposado and anejo. On Thursday, May 3, Portland-based wine and spirits expert Hoke Harden guides MAC members through a tasting of six premium blue agave tequilas. The kitchen prepares a Mexican themed buffet dinner to get the eve- ning started and some surprise entertainment brings a note of culture.
All tequilas are made from the liquid of the blue agave plant, but many use only a percentage of the liquid, blended with other ingredients. Premium tequilas like those tasted at the event use 100 percent blue agave. The blue agave plant typically spends six to eight years in the field before it is harvested. Its spear-shaped

leaves are cut off, and the remaining cores, known as piñas, are pressed or ground to release their juices. Those juices are fermented and distilled to become tequila.
Harden is a Certified Specialist of Wine, Certified Spirits Specialist, master instructor for the French Wine Academy, instructor at Mount Hood Community College and owner of Elixir Vitae Wine & Spirits Academy. He has more than 30 years of experience in the wine and spirits industry, and visited MAC in November to discuss cognac.
