Bay hugs the World Heritage Jurassic coastline, and while the fabulous views are reason enough to take this road, be sure to explore the small villages en route.

High on the summit of

Blackdown Hill, above the village of Portesham, sits Hardy’s Monument. Visitors are forgiven if they assume that the monument is in memory of writer Thomas Hardy, but it is in fact a tribute to Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy,

the Scenic Route

Flag Captain of HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, who lived in Portesham until 1781 when he joined the Navy. Pause at the lay-by above Abbotsbury Hill: from here the views over Chesil Beach and onwards to the Isle of Portland never fail to impress.

Abbotsbury village is home to the Abbotsbury Swannery, and also to Sub-tropical Gardens that cover some 20 acres. High on a nearby hill sits St Catherine’s Chapel which is dedicated to St Catherine, the patron saint of spinsters. Swyre’s Holy Trinity Church is

Grade 1 Listed and features a number of monuments dedicated to eminent local families. There are both coast and countryside walks around the village, and when it’s time for refreshments call into the local inn.

Just a few miles to the east of Bridport lies the pretty village of Burton Bradstock, which has retained much of its character and offers a glimpse into a bygone age.

Climb the cliff path at West Bay for far reaching views along the coast then relax on the harbourside, the perfect way to round off your day out.
