UPWEY

n a wooded valley, just below the Ridgeway, is the pretty village of Upwey, which takes its name from the River Wey.

I The river rises behind the Upwey Wishing Well, and King

George III, who visited Weymouth fourteen times between 1789 and 1805, would refresh himself from the well during his long horse rides on the surrounding hills. A gold cup was held locally for the King’s use and this was later given to the Royal Ascot

club as a presentation trophy. In 1887, in celebration of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, recessed stone seating was built alongside the well and each year in early May the ancient custom of ‘well dressing’ takes place. There are several Wey Valley walks leading from the village; look out for the signposts and enjoy some of the beautiful countryside. As you wander around the village you’ll see a Mill which dates from 1802 and said to be the setting for Thomas Hardy’s ‘The Trumpet Major’, as Hardy knew the owners of that time.

The charming little riverside ‘Gallery on the Wey’ is a real delight and exhibits work by artists
