April/May 2012 Gifts for Garden Centres 15
Skylark distributed seeds to children at a local primary school and Bart is to judge the results with a tea party planned for the summer. He said: “We want to show them
how to grow and nurture plants and that the countryside is not just about bad smells and tractors clogging the roads”.
‘
...the business concentrates on
model animals which are hugely popular with children...’
The response has been good and
last Summer was particularly successful with families holidaying at home more and enjoying outings to the maze and animal park. Many opted to take a model
animal home with them or to buy country-style gifts. Bart said: “Anything that looked as if it was humanised was popular – we had a postbox nesting box (far left) that sold very well.” Future plans will see the gift
range extended to include candles and some housewares but this is a garden centre in fertile countryside described as a ‘giant growbag’ and the Skylark team is in no doubt where its strength lies. Pottery sheepdogs, rustic birdfeeders and purple wellies will continue to be big sellers!
