IT IS ALWAYS GOOD to hear different arguments and in the learning and development profession you can always be guaranteed passionate opinions which don’t always coincide. A split is developing over mobile learning and this month’s issues of e.learning age airs both sides of the argument. A news story gives a rather downbeat assessment of the adoption of mobile, while a feature gives a strong argument for the primary importance of mobile in the learning mix for business (page 12). In truth both sides will be right. Mobile does present problems for many: not least because of the uncertainty of the kit required to make it a reality and integrating it with the rest of the learning offering. Who can blame those suffering from gadget fatigue? The mobile device is not as ubiquitous or as loved as the marketing of some manufacturers would have us believe. And that statement holds true even if sales of the latest iPad is a recorder breaker for Apple. On the other hand the e-learning industry is clearly busy working on mobile learning projects for progressive thinking organisations which have a clear learning need and have worked out that well designed mobile is the answer. There may be a little hype surrounding mobile at the moment: when hasn’t there been some hype about something in this fast moving technology field? It’s part of the industry’s charm. But that doesn’t mean it is not an exciting development for pushing work based learning which should – when appropriate – be enthusiastically taken up.
