E
bbw Vale Enterprise Zone is one of five in Wales which went live yesterday.
The Welsh Government announced in
September that as part of its economic policy agenda it would be introducing Enterprise Zones in Wales and take a bespoke approach to each location based on the skills and workforce history of each area.
The Enterprise Zone at Ebbw Vale is
based on five sites adjacent to the Heads of the Valleys road. The sites at Tredegar Business Park, The Works, Rhyd yBlew, Bryn Serth and Rassau are designed to house manufacturing companies. In addition there is aregeneration proposal centred around ainternational motor sport complex. It’s aim it to assist with the transformation of the local economy in Blaenau Gwent and attract inward investment focussing on the manufacturing sector. It will expand the industrial base and attract major companies to the area with the aim of creating jobs for local people. Business Minister Edwina Hart said: “The Ebbw Vale Enterprise Zone has the

potential to become avibrant, high technology hotspot of Welsh based manufacturing. “There is already significant interest from
the private sector regarding various sites within Blaenau Gwent which combined with the Enterprise Zone have the potential to create more than 4,000 new jobs. “It will compliment other regeneration
initiatives including the redevelopment of the former steelworks site and infrastructure investment in the area and improvement of the Heads of the Valleys road.” Discussions are continuing between the
Welsh Government and the UK Government on the viability of extending Enhanced Capital Allowances for Wales beyond Deeside’s Enterprise Zones to take in the others launched yesterday incuding Ebbw Vale. Last month the Treasury announced
that 100 per cent Capital Allowances were to be made available to support selected investment in certain parts of the Deeside Enterprise Zone. Blaenau GwentAMAlun Davies said:
“The Welsh Government wants Enhanced Capital Allowances to work hard for Enterprise Zones throughout Wales. The Treasury has already responded constructively to our challenge and are continuing to work together for astrong outcome.” Edwina Hart said: “I am pleased that
Enhanced Capital Allowances have been agreed for asite at the heart of our Deeside Enterprise Zone, with the option for additional sites in Wales being added at a later date. This staged approach means that more balanced consideration can be given to other opportunities in the first tranche of zones, alongside opportunities in the two preferred locations Iannounced at the end of January.” Gareth Jenkins, chairman of Ebbw Vale
Enterprise Zone said: “Enterprise Zones are aunique and timely opportunity to focus our efforts on balancing the Welsh economy. Weneed to attract the biggest and best companies to Wales whilst also supporting existing businesses with major growth plans. Ebbw Vale has astrong heritage of manufacturing and Iamsure we would all like to see aresurgence.”
