REDRUTH & CAMBORNE
he ivy covered chimneys and engine houses that can be seen around the neighbouring towns of Redruth and Camborne are constant reminders of the area’s rich tin and copper mining history. In the 1850s, Cornwall was responsible for producing two thirds of the world’s copper!

Richard Trevithick is one of Cornwall’s most famous sons. Born in 1771 he was the son of a mine captain and his interest in the engineering side of mining began at an early age. He pioneered the use of high-pressure steam, which dramatically increased the capabilities of earlier engines. His achievements are celebrated at Camborne’s Trevithick Day, which takes place on the last Saturday in April each year. Engineer William Murdoch, best known as the inventor of gas lighting, lived in Redruth from 1782 until 1798. His work with steam engines within the mining
industry is honoured on ‘Murdoch Day’ which this year takes place in Redruth on 16th June, when street entertainment, live music, a street market and a fabulous parade will see the town a riot of colour and fun for all ages. Those wanting to learn more about the history of Cornwall should visit The Cornwall Centre (Kresenn Kernow) in Alma Place, Redruth. Of particular interest are the Tregellas Tapestries, a series of modern embroidered panels that record Cornish history and culture from prehistoric times to today. Home to the Cornish Studies Library visitors can view old newspapers and photographs, research family history and browse in the book shop. In 2006 UNESCO awarded
World Heritage status to the Cornwall and West Devon landscape in recognition of the contribution that the area made to the industrial revolution and to mining practices around the globe.

for the opening of new trails that link to the existing mainly traffic free routes. Now covering some 30 miles around Redruth and Camborne, the trails follow the tram and railway routes that were used to transport supplies to and from the mines. A popular walk or cycle route is the circular Great Flat Lode Trail which passes many of the major mines. Both Camborne and Redruth are bustling shopping and
commercial centres with a number of interesting buildings that would once have been the homes of mine owners and other wealthy businessmen. The Carn Brea Leisure Centre at Pool offers a whole range of activities, from taking part in an aerobics class to zooming down a 25m flume in the indoor pool. And at nearby Stithians Lake there are opportunities to try windsurfing, sailing, rowing and canoeing.
