PAGE 4 • APRIL 2012 • TABLE HOPPING NOW PLAYING The Hunger Games by BRIAN MILLER

From the moment that the announcement was made that production had com- menced on the THE HUNGER GAMES, buzz began to build. The film would be the first of 3 films based upon Suzanne Collins’ dark Young Adult series. As if the unique storyline were not enough to pique interest, the cast and crew boasted a number of formidable names. At the helm was veteran director Gary Ross (PLEAS- ANTVILLE, SEABISCUIT), and in the starring role, recent Academy Award nominee and future box-office queen Jennifer Lawrence was set to step into the shoes of Katniss Everdeen. For those unfamiliar with THE HUNGER GAMES, the story begins decades after the collapse of the United States. North America has been separated into 12 dis- tricts, all of which bow down to the authority exuded by The Capitol. Once a year, in an offering of acceptance and allegiance, each district must choose 1 boy and 1 girl between the ages of 12-18 to take part in a fight-to-the-death competition, that will be watched by every person in the entire country. The winner will bask in a life of wealth and happiness, while all of the other participants will find themselves in an early grave.

Having spent her life in the woods, becoming an adept hunter and an excellent archer, she knows that she stands a much better shot at survival than her homebody sister. Over on the boy’s side, Peeta Mel- lark (Josh Hutcherson), a baker’s son who once helped Katniss in a time of need, is selected as the district’s other represen- tative.
