crime that left him crippled for life. Unconcerned with the misery of others, Mavis unabashedly pronounces her intentions to Matt. Despite his vehement pleas to cease and desist, she makes a phone call, and sets the wheels of seduction into motion. Theron, who has been choosey with her recent roles, gives a blissfully conniving performance as the sly and evil Mavis. She may be the main character, but she is certainly nobody’s hero. Strutting around town with booze in and boobs out, she is shameless in every conceivable way. Though she is downright deplorable, Theron remains magnetic, constantly challenging and thumbing her nose at the viewer. It is difficult to remember another protagonist who effectively makes you cringe with every fiery flick of the tongue. Serving as a resigned, yet desperate foil to Theron’s Mavis is the breakout performance by Patton Oswalt. The comedian, best known for his recurring role on KING OF QUEENS and for providing the voice for Remy in RATATOUILLE, brings a haunting realism to the damaged Matt. Obliterating the line that exists between drama and comedy, it’s the type of turn that goes largely unnoticed due to the dynamic nature of the film’s main character. Still, it’s a shame that Os- walt’s name didn’t appear more in the major award’s circuit ballots, as it was easily one of the best sup- porting performances of the year. Regardless of absent accolades, with this phenomenal performance, it is certain that the veteran actor’s career path will only continue to rise. YOUNG ADULT failed to illicit the same type of attention as JUNO, yet Reit- man and Cody have crafted a complex comedy that remains invigoratingly original

throughout. The ability to shun conformity and piece together a story that is as infuriating, gut-wrenching, and hilarious as this takes a daring fusion of talent. Like most projects that challenge convention, YOUNG ADULT will never achieve a high level of mass appeal. But, for those daring enough to give it a go,
