This spring, fashion has taken on a decidedly more tropical flavor with a tribe of bright, new pastels ready to sweep into the fruit basket of your heart. While pastels have veered in the past towards the shades that were predominant in the intro to Miami Vice(think bubble-gum pink and electric aqua) now pastels have ventured into a different territory, very comparable to the colors you might find in a packet of tropical Skittles. 2012 spring fashion isn’t just limited to pastels however; colorblocked mod-style dresses and tops, flowy, romantic silhouettes, tribal prints, and cornea-searing, neon jeans are all having their shining mo- ments. To describe the trends greeting us this spring as schizophrenic would be a huge understatement. So, the good news: there are so many crazy trends happening in fashion that are so dramatically different from each other that even if you absolutely detest

But, for those of you who consider a splurge on the fat glossy beast that hap- pens to be the latest issue of Vogue the closest you’re going to get to designer fashion, unless of course you’re Kristin Stewart, I suggest you look elsewhere to test the trend waters. Specifically, the dens of fun that lurk right underneath our noses: resale shops!

the idea of wearing that funky tangerine romper you spotted in the pages of some fancy magazine, you could rock a lavender chiffon blouse and still win ma- jor brownie points. However, if you are feeling a little bit dangerous and willing to venture out of your comfort zone, then some of the trends popping out right now will welcome you with open arms. For runway inspiration, look no further than the incredible designer Mary Katrantzou, who created a collection awash in bright, neon tribal prints that she describes as “a whirlwind of metal.” Her de- signs also incorporate floral prints with industrial objects such as cans and car parts that are crystallized and crushed onto a dress that look like a tiered floral wedding cake. The concept might sound a bit quirky, but the key point of her collection, and what makes her such an exceptional designer, is that she focuses on an unusual theme for each collection she designs. Her spring collec- tion is a brilliant contrast of strong vs. soft. Specifically, she draws parallels between the serial repetition you find in nature, think pretty fields of flowers, and the industrial mass production of our soci- ety, according to Style.com.
