What is an Injury and Illness
Prevention Program?
Injury and Illness Prevention Programs (I2P2) are high on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) priority list for 2012. However, there remain many unanswered questions, and deep concerns, regarding these types of safety and health management programs among US businesses. Understanding injury and illness prevention programs will help all affected entities discuss this potential regulation in an intelligent and informed manner.

I2P2 is essentially a safety and health management system designed to assist employers with identification and correction of potential workplace hazards to prevent occupational injury and illness. Fifteen states, and many other industrialized nations, already require some or all employers to implement some type of I2P2 program, with many more states and nations recommending their adoption without the mandate of state or federal law.
Most I2P2 programs have a similar set of broad principles. Those with experience in other management systems, such as ISO9001 or ISO14001, will see similarities between the major elements of an I2P2 program and their existing management systems. Please note that some specific regulations have more prescriptive requirements than those required by an I2P2 program (e.g. hazard identification and assessment may have more specific requirements under OSHA regulations than is required by I2P2, the training requirements may be more prescriptive
for particular regulations, etc.).
