business in their own time, thus ending their interest within the company almost straight away. Alternatively, they may phone the sales team, in which case the sales team will use the customer database to log the client, set up an account and note contact details. If the client orders - usually after a significant amount of correspondence via email, then that order will be logged in the system for the production team to pick up.

The production team may use a system for CAD (computer aided design) to get a feel of how the product should look and whether or not it is feasible to complete. This is where technology is now heavily used; technology has helped speed up the production process and makes it far more accurate. To make a standard piece of furniture many items of technology are needed, from planning the wood to spraying the finish on to the raw product. Every step of the way technology is needed.

The same goes for any new business looking to start up. A savvy entrepreneur will know that technology should be at the forefront of their business. The correct application of technology, be it

a landline or the creation of a website, will propel a business from obscurity to a household brand. What works well for one person may be another person’s downfall. Investing in the right technology and applying it in the right way could be the difference between an increase of great proportion and a decline in the need for your services.

Here is a staggering fact for you. By the end of 2009, Dell had generated $6.5 million in sales JUST from Twitter. Wouldn’t we all love to be able to say that? Would they be able to report that if the technology, in this case Twitter, wasn’t available today? I doubt it. However, technology only goes so far. Yes you can reach a broader audience on the internet due to social media, but because there is so much noise you need to speak

louder, a lot louder. Let me give you some sort of perspective. There are over 650 million users on Facebook, 135 million users on Linkedin and 100 million users on Twitter, you are one in 885 million trying to get your purpose, your selling point and your business across. If you can integrate technology (be it Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin or all three) with your business idea and what makes it unique – you have the platform to create a LOT of interest in your product.

Technology truly is useful within business, but even more so is the Social Media side of technology. There is a pool of potential clients just waiting for your next business idea. Don’t get outside and sell it, sit in front of a computer, market it well and with technology on your side prepare yourself for the possibility of monopolisation. In my honest opinion Franklin’s quote is outdated, today it would be “In the world nothing can be said to be certain except death, taxes and the use of technology.”
