Interview

maxim that ‘if you build it, they will come’ but you still need to know that your consumers will actually want your product or service.”

I can’t help but wonder during the interview whether there is any sign of Hilary slowing down in terms of her commitment to Pall-Ex. With TV shows, charity campaigning and investments in new projects all on her agenda, would the true source of her success remain a main priority? “Yes. I remain committed to Pall-Ex, first and foremost. It was the company that I built from scratch and it is still my focus.” Devey displays an admirable passion for the corporation that launched her career, so I enquire as to what the future holds for the company? “There is still a lot of growth in it. It’s still a very profitable business and is very efficient. There has never been a blemish or smear on Pall-EX and I am proud of that. In fact, just this year we opened in Italy and we are going to be opening up in Poland and Spain, so I am still very involved.” With plans to take the brand global, Devey is most definitely going full speed ahead and shows no signs of stopping.

Outside of a very professional, focused exterior, I ponder on Hilary’s alternative passions outside of the business world, hoping to gain a personal insight into Hilary the single mother, who is devoted to her son Mevlit, loves her dogs and compares her home residence, an extension of Rangemore Hall called the Edward VII wing (aptly named due to the King staying here with his mistress) as making her feel like a princess in a castle. A girly girl underneath the grimace she displays on the BBC Dragons’ Den advertorial, she reveals her biggest extravagance - clothes. A huge fan of designer Alexander McQueen, even when she had no money and was living on top of a Fish and Chip shop as a single mother in the early stages of Pall-EX, Devey maintained the philosophy of saving up to buy a show-stopping outfit. Not just an inspirational business woman, but a lady after my own retail-obsessed heart.
