LIFESTYLE Restaurant Report

I have always felt that the General Manager has the real responsibility of making a given restaurant happen. Certainly the chef and the owner (or chef/ owner) are critically important, but show me a really effective general manager, and I will show you a really good restaurant.

This leads me to one of my favorite spots at the shore along with one of my favorite general managers. Donna McCarthy just continues to get things done and Gallagher’s Steakhouse at Resorts continues to pack them in. Donna is a long-time veteran of the Ark Restaurant Group out of New York, and when Ark chose to bring their steakhouse to Resorts in Atlantic City, they chose the affiliation with the classic Gallagher’s in Manhattan. At the time, Donna was busy running her popular breakfast and lunch spot in Ventnor called Hannah’s G’s (named after her daughter).

The Ark people obviously share my view of the importance of a serious GM, and Donna was the obvious choice. In short order, Donna brought one her chefs (Chef Sergio Soto) to Gallagher’s at Resorts, and this guy has quietly emerged as one of the top chefs in Atlantic City. The addition of the popular Gallagher’s Burger Bar across from the main restaurant was yet another excellent decision, and what more can one say. The Gallagher’s food and overall presentation speaks for itself, and yes, the decision to add Donna McCarthy to the lineup has proven to be a touch of genius.
