life. That summer tradition, those family times, they were the heart of the memories I now cherish. Although I live only about 20 minutes

from the beach now, it amazes me how I still feel a tingling inside when I start driving toward the ocean, and it tickles me that my children feel that same way. Only now, instead of the bay bridge, their landmark is the windmills. As soon as they see them they shout, “We are almost there!”

What got me taking this trip down

memory lane? It all came back to me when I went to an event called “Do AC Proud” in early March that was presented by Liza Cartmell, president of the newly created Atlantic City Alliance, a nonprofit organization that will promote Atlantic City with funds from the casino industry. The ACA videotaped local residents and people in the business and political community sharing their experiences and their love of Atlantic City. It was heartwarming and inspiring. While I usually write about health, I was so touched by the outpouring of love for this area, that I switched gears and decided to write about another kind of health — the health of our city, the health of our future. In Liza’s opening remarks at the event,

We have been advised that some people (not a lot of people) but some folks nonetheless, have yet to order their ChequeMate Card. We're talking about great restaurants and wonderful golf courses along with a terrific way to save money. ChequeMate is a no brainer because everyone wins (except the folks who

have yet to take advantage of our offer).

They say that you can't buy happiness, but our ChequeMate members think otherwise!

she talked about making Atlantic City an “experience”. A visit to our city should be something people smile about when they get back to their jobs on Monday morning, something they tell their friends about, and something they want to do again. Liza notes that the goal of the AC Alliance is to increase the number of visitors and length of their stay in our town. This is what will drive our economy and “create more jobs and profitability.” The research shows that everyone knows that we have gaming in Atlantic City, but many people don’t explore the natural beauty of our area, or enjoy all the other wonderful activities that are available. As casinos have sprung up in states all around us, we need to give our guests more. She has developed a strategic marketing plan to help re-brand Atlantic City’s identity as “a destination, not just a collection of casinos.” We have already come a long way

from Governor Chris Christie’s initia- tive in 2010 that the state would play a bigger role in the direction of Atlantic City. Everything is in place right now.
