McLaughlin Receives Coach of the Year Honors

by Chris White Salem High boys’ basketball coach Rob McLaughlin was named New Hampshire

Division I Coach of the Year last week. This past season, McLaughlin led Salem to a 14-4 regular season record to earn the number two seed in the Division I tournament. The Blue Devils achieved an overall record of 15-7 for the entire season. It was the second straight season McLaughlin was voted Division 1 Coach of the Year. In 2010-11, the first-year head coach led Salem to the Division 1 quarterfinals, finishing with an overall record of 15-8. Despite returning only one starter (point guard Jon Klecan) from last year’s squad, the Blue Devils still managed to find their way to the top of the Division 1 standings this season. “It’s definitely a great honor,” McLaughlin said of being voted Coach of the Year.

means a lot to receive an honor like that when it’s voted on by your peers. Overall, it means you had a great year.”

In addition to receiving Coach of the Year honors, McLaughlin and his assistants, Mike LaRosa and Nate Stanton, were selected to coach the Division I All-Stars at the New Hampshire Boys Senior All-Star Basketball Game on Sunday, March 18. The Division I All-Stars won the game, 93-92, at New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord. Salem seniors Klecan and Ben Slepian also represented Salem in the contest. This winter, McLaughlin led a team that played outstanding team basketball at both ends of the floor. Emphasizing a team-first philosophy, the Blue Devils surprised many of their Division 1 opponents by winning games with their hustle, unselfishness, and no-quit attitude. “That was their whole focus all year,” McLaughlin said of his team’s unselfish play. “Everyone played their role and made sure they picked each other up.”
