However, on Saturday, 25th March, the table was turned and they became the subject of the buzz, chatter, presentations and formal statements. For a change, they were the focus of attention and scrutiny; but this was in a nice way. The inaugural event dubbed as Adhika [Filipino word for “aspirations’] traced the birth of the first newspaper and subsequent print and online publications, as well as radio and television programs aimed to serve the Filipinos who have made

Australia their home. It paid tribute to the many men and women, who have the passion to serve the community through their stories that inform, entertain and inspire people to action. The Dome in Burwood RSL was the setting for this


celebration. Before the program proper, guests were able to examine the exhibits of the various framed copies of publications arranged by Jimmy Pimentel [Faifax Journalist, Columnist and Convenor of the FilPressSydney group,


and adviser to the Adhika project], as well examples of work in the mainstream media by FilPressSydney members such as Edd Aragon [Senior Editorial Cartoonist of Sydney Morning Herald, writer and artist] and Michelle Baltazar [Editor of Financial Standard]. In addition, Marx Canoy, Chef, served canapés before the guests were asked to take their seats.

spearheaded by Josie and Gerry Musa of Radio


Kawayan, in collaboration with Radio Sandigan [Michelle Baltazar and Violi Calvert [and with Radio Dalisay [Cita Hoersch and Nilda and Mon Carpo]. It was attended by Filipino- Australian media, members of the mainstream media, community leaders and supporters. The special guests included the Consul General, Hon Anne Jalando-on Louis, Consul Marford Angeles, Hon Kevin Connolly [Member for Riverstone]; Mr. Gerard Noonan [Head, of


Super Media and strong supporter of International Federation of Journalists], Sean Brogan [Director of Communications, Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance]. Ali Cromier [former investigative journalist from Australian Financial Review and Business Review Weekly], Wal & Lorraine Smith [Riverstone Lions], and Fr. Vlad Echalas [Adhika Spiritual Adviser]. The program was


kept flowing smoothly by Michelle Baltazar [Radio Sandigan Broadcaster, Editor and Publisher of The Australian Filipina Magazine and the Head of Media & Publisher of the Financial Standard] who was stunning in her purple terno [gown] and did a great job of Emcee on her own. Her task was made easier by the able support of FLAGCOM gems Charles Chan who looked after backstage and Albert Prias who directed proceedings from the Control Room, with Violi Calvert [Freelance Writer, Radio Sandigan Broadcaster and Media PR Director of
