TALK MEMPHIS … PLUS
Jesse Winchester is a widely respected and exceptionally gifted singer-songwriter of over four decades’ standing. His emergence in 1970 was not without controversy, for after much soul-searching and personal pain, Winchester was one of many thousands of American contemporaries who moved Canada in the 1960s to avoid fighting in the Vietnam War. However, instead of songs protesting the war or the political climate of the time, he wrote more personal, reflective and allusive material, deceptively simple compositions that are also memorable and affecting. Acts that have covered his songs include Patti Page, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Buffett, Joan Baez, Anne Murray, Reba McEntire, the Everly Brothers, Wynona Judd, The Weather Girls, Fairport Convention, Tim Hardin, Emmylou Harris, Ronnie Hawkins, Nicolette Larsen, Ian Matthews, Tom Rush and Wilson Pickett. The albums were produced by people as diverse as Robbie Robertson, Todd Rundgren, Brian Ahern, Norbert Puttnam and Willie Mitchell.
Edsel is proud to reissue all seven of Winchester’s albums for the Bearsville label, originally released between 1970 and 1981. The four releases feature all the lyrics and extensive annotation by Alan Robinson, while “Talk Memphis” features three previously unreleased songs and three bonus live tracks.

Blues harmonica player and vocalist Paul Butterfield (1942-87) first came to prominence when the Paul Butterfield Blues Band was signed to Jac Holzman’s Elektra Records. Featuring guitar legend Mike Bloomfield, the eponymous first album was produced by future Doors producer Paul Rothchild and issued in 1965. It was followed in 1966 by the classic “East West”. After playing at Woodstock, Butterfield signed to Bob Dylan manager Albert Grossman’s Bearsville label, and formed a new group around him (which he called Better Days, and which included Geoff Muldaur and Amos Garrett) to record “Better Days” and “It All Comes Back” in 1972 and 1973.
“Put It Your Ear” was recorded in Los Angeles and Bearsville itself with renowned sessioneers like Chuck Rainey, Tim Drummond, Fred Carter, Jr., Ben Keith and Bernard Purdie, as well as Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of The Band. “North South” was recorded in 1981 at Hi Records’ Studios in Memphis, and was produced by the legendary Willie Mitchell. It features Hi’s rhythm and brass sections playing throughout. The three bonus tracks include a live version of Randy Vanwarmer’s “Just When I Needed You Most”. Both booklets feature extensive annotation by Alan Robinson.
