GOODNEWS Intoxicated
The landlords of Notting Hill in London ask far too much rent. Damn Hugh Grant and that stupid film! After the demise of Stand Out/Minus Zero, near neighbours Nick and Debbie at Intoxica on Portobello Road did manage to hang in there in their fine looking shop on the vibrant thoroughfare. Sadly, we have now learnt that Intoxica will no longer continue trading in this location. To say the least, Shindig! are all of a flummox remembering happy days skipping between Intoxica and Stand Out/Minus Zero with carrier bags of tasty garage and psych in hand. If you wish to learn in what manner Intoxica will continue (or are interested in discussing business investment, for which Nick is currently looking) please email him at

Flamin’’eck!
The core of the classic ‘Shake Some Action’ line-up of the The Flamin’ Groovies has reformed for a new album. Cyril Jordan, George Alexander and Chris Wilson have already started work on material and there are also plans to finish up two “lost” tracks from the band’s 1981 sessions in the legendary Gold Star studios. “As soon as the project was agreed the songs just started to flow. It’ll be great to be writing with Chris again,” said Jordan. “I’m really jazzed about this and I know Groovies fans will be, too.” “For years I’ve been saying that a Groovies reunion would never happen and I’m happy to admit I was wrong,” added Wilson. “The Flamin’ Groovies are firmly back in action.” The band is currently looking for a label to release the album when it’s finished. “WejusthadtogetoutofLA;Californiaforthatmatter. That’swhywenamedtherecordDownInLA”
Aficionados of the folk-rock and country-rock genre will no doubt have salivated at the news that Cherry Red’s subsidiary Now Sounds has just released Brewer & Shipley’s Down In LA on CD for the first time. Originally issued on A&M Records in October 1968, the duo’s tragically overlooked debut outing is a mighty fine collection, brimming full of infectious, melodic songs, striking close-harmony vocals and ringing acoustic guitars. Creators of the tongue-in-cheek drug
anthem, ‘One Toke Over The Line’, a US Top 10 in ’71, Down In LA finds the songsmiths coming to terms with life in the big city. Disillusioned, the duo high-tailed it back to the Midwest before the LP’s release, leading the label to assume they’d quit the business.
BreakingTheLore
The good bods behind fRoots magazine have organised Weirdlore, a one day event of “psych folk and beyond” happening on Sunday 10th June at Folk House, 40a Park Street, Bristol BS1 5JG. It’s a battle cry against the long-running clichés rallied at folk music, spotlighting musicians and songwriters who go beyond the mainstream; who take inspiration from the themes, tunes and musical strangenesses of our roots and make something new but still distinctly local out of them. Artists include Corncrow, Telling The Bees, Sharron Kraus, Algernon & The Hawk and many more. Tickets are priced £30 from

“What we were actually doing was getting back to what we’d always done and enjoyed the most, performing,” says Michael Brewer, looking back today. “It probably wasn’t the wisest move for having the LP promoted, but we just had to get out of LA; California for that matter. That’s why we named the record Down In LA. As Tom and I have said, ‘It took us three months to save enough money to move to California, and three years to save enough to leave!’” Besides the excellent stunning sound quality,
the new reissue boasts a 16-page, full colour booklet, complete with rare, unpublished photos and detailed liner notes, drawing from interviews with Michael Brewer, Tom Shipley and co-producer Jerry Riopelle.
