In an interview with Richard Green, Lulu tells the NME that Maurice played on her recent release, ‘I’m A Tiger’. In Melody Maker, Lulu’s manager, Marion Massey, tells the paper that Lulu will cut down on personal appearances following her wedding to Maurice. “Lulu and Maurice want to see as much of each other as possible…”
Friday, January 10, 1969 The Bee Gees regroup at IBC studios to help The Marbles tape two new Gibb numbers for a potential single: ‘The Walls Fell Down’ and ‘Love You’.
Sunday, January 19, 1969 The group tapes two performances (one in colour and another in black and white) for an upcoming episode of television’s This Is Tom Jones. In both cases, they perform a unique medley of ‘I Started A Joke’ and ‘First Of May’.
January 23, 1969 Trixie Belmont, writing for the Women’s News Service, interviews Lulu’s manager, Marion Massey, who has advised Lulu to give up her career to be with Maurice. They are due to be wed following Lulu’s appearance at The Eurovision Song Contest on March 29th.
Saturday, January 25, 1969 The NME reports that the next Bee Gees single has been delayed to the end of February because of a special continent- only? release by the group (‘I Started A Joke’). The paper says their next single will be ‘Lamplight’. Shooting for their movie, Lord Kitchener’s Little Drummer Boys, will reportedly start in
City on the black sea, here we come. Maurice, Robin, Barry and Colin pretend they haven’t split up
Spain during March. If it is delayed any further, shooting will revert to South Africa (as originally intended).
Tuesday, January 28, 1969 At IBC Studio A, a final mono mix for the single release of ‘First Of May’ is made.
Saturday, February 1, 1969 The NME reports that the group’s next single will be ‘First Of May’ c/w ‘Lamplight’, to be issued on February 14th. The LP, Odessa, has been delayed to February 28th. Barry tells the paper that he expects to begin work on his Hollywood movie, a Western, next Christmas with Clint Eastwood. Barry says that Robert Stigwood will book Robin and Maurice into solo movie roles concurrently. Their oft-delayed group movie, produced by John Perrington, will now start shooting in April.
Wednesday, February 5, 1969 At IBC studios, the brothers tape acoustic demos of three new songs: ‘Bury Me Down By The River’ (which will be completed for Cucumber Castle), ‘I Fell In Love With A Beautiful Woman’ and ‘My Woman’ (neither of which will go further than these rough versions). Despite the chipper mood captured on the tape, it will be their last set of recordings together as a trio until August ’70.
Thursday, February 6, 1969 At IBC studios, engineer Mike Claydon mixes ‘Nobody’s Someone’ for mono; however, this track will be passed on for initial release.
Saturday, February 8, 1969 The NME reports that Vince Melouney will travel to America next month to produce The Cowsills. He also plans to work with Hungarian singer Sarolta Zalatnay, and continues managing Ashton, Gardner & Dyke (whose first release on Polydor is imminent).
