Saturday, March 2, 1968 Robert Stigwood tells the NME: “The Bee Gees’ film has been delayed because of script troubles. We hope now to begin shooting the movie on location in Kenya in May.” The Cucumber Castle television special has also been delayed until after the feature film’s completion.
Monday, March 4, 1968 The group appears in a special film clip of their song ‘Lemons Never Forget’ on US television’s Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In ( filmed on location in Los Angeles during January ’68).
Thursday, March 7, 1968 The final date of the group’s German tour is scheduled for tonight in Berlin.
Tuesday, March 12, 1968 At IBC Studio A, engineer Mike Claydon makes mono mixes of the backing tracks for ‘Words’ and ‘The Singer Sang His Song’.
Sunday, March 17, 1968 In Britain, The Bee Gees are heard on BBC radio’s Top Gear and stateside they can be seen on television’s legendary Ed Sullivan Show performing ‘Words’.
Friday, March 22, 1968 The Bee Gees’ latest single (‘Jumbo’ coupled with ‘The Singer Sang His Song’) is issued in Britain today. In IBC Studio A, the group tapes eight takes of a backing track for the Gibbs’ ‘By The Light Of The Burning Candle’. This track will ultimately be given to their protégés The Marbles – Trevor Gordon and Graham Bonnet – to add their voices to. The Marbles first single, ‘Only One Woman’ (another Bee Gees-created backing track), will be issued in August.
Tuesday, March 26, 1968 Barry appears on UK Radio 1’s Pop Inn.
Wednesday, March 27, 1968 The group opens their first ever UK tour with an elaborate, 40- minute show at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Also today, their double A-sided single release of ‘Jumbo’ and ‘The Singer Sang His Song’ debuts on the British charts. Over the next seven weeks it will peak at a mild #25.
Vince: “Robert was executive producer on everything we did then. He was the overriding factor. ‘That’s the one that’s coming out.’ [We would say], ‘Oh no, we want that one.’ He said, ‘That’s the one that’s coming out.’ I think once we really pushed him for ‘Jumbo’ to be the single and he put ‘The Singer Sang His Song’ on the other side. Of course ‘Jumbo,’ nobody played it and he reversed the A-side practically immediately. Then we had a hit again, not a #1, But, after that we didn’t complain anymore. ‘Okay, you can select them,’ you know?”

Saturday, March 30, 1968 The Bee Gees’ UK tour travels to The ABC in Chester.
Sunday, March 31, 1968 The Bee Gees appear in concert at Manchester’s Palace Theatre. In the press, Johnny Speight (a journeymen British screenwriter of sitcoms, including Till Death Us Do Part) has agreed to write the band’s movie. He says of his script and possible casting: “I want a top comic to play Lord Kitchener, because it strikes me he was a buffoon. It will be hard to make The Bee Gees cockneys, but there will be bad language.”
Monday, April 1, 1968 As their tour hits Leicester’s De Montfort Hall, the group is seen on US television’s Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In for a second time.
Thursday, April 4, 1968 The group is scheduled to perform at The Regal Theatre in Cambridge.
Friday, April 5, 1968 The group is scheduled to perform in Slough at The Adelphi.
Saturday, April 6, 1968 In Britain, the group is scheduled to perform at Sheffield’s City Hall. In the US, ‘Jumbo’ enters the charts and over the next six weeks it will peak at #57. In Germany, the group is seen once again (in a pre-taped segment) on television’s Beat Club. Also today, the NME reports that shooting for the band’s film is now scheduled to commence in October. Screenwriter Johnny Speight accepted the job after seeing The Bee Gees in concert at The Royal Albert Hall.
Sunday, April 7, 1968 The group is scheduled to perform at Birmingham Hippodrome.
Wednesday, April 10, 1968 The group is scheduled to perform at The ABC Theatre in Carlisle.
