It was with great anticipation that I hopped off the tube at Hampstead to meet (Happening editor and Shindig! writer) Phil Istine. Going to Air Studios to hold court with Small Faces’ sticksman Kenney Jones was a big deal! Anyone struck by the mod bug in their teens will very well know what I mean. Even if we did have to wait for a good hour, our chat with

Kenney was well worth it – he really did seem a decent bloke; the last of a dying breed of Cockney scamp, all comic asides and quips. Hearing playback of the – then – forthcoming remastered back catalogue was unforgettable. This summer finally sees The Small Faces inducted

into The Rock ’n’ Roll Hall Of Fame in America along with their back catalogue gaining the detailed attention it deserves – and yes, you can now safely throw away those tired old reissues as the “newly mastered from the tapes” editions sound like nothing on earth! To mark this momentous occasion, two tailor made

pieces chronicle the band’s transition from Decca to Immediate and the amazing Ogdens album. Lovers of ’60s music – and even pop and rock, in general – cannot argue their brilliance. Bumping into Thomas Walsh and Tosh Flood of the

superb Irish band Pugwash at the cafe in Air was another pleasant surprise. Like us they’re huge Small Faces fans and just had to be there. Chris Twomey’s excellent interview with Thomas is an eye opener. Learning of the improvement in Robin Gibb’s health

has been yet more pleasing news. The closing part of Andrew Sandoval’s fact filled ’60s Bee Gees timeline sees the brothers busier than ever, over exhausted and raising their game with each new record. Phew, what a corking edition. Jon ‘Mojo’ Mills Editor-In-Chief
