Support for Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers

Rayma Scalzo Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s

Can you name the make and model?

Larry Cabral This car’s huge 400 ci (6.6-liter)

engine provided so much torque that the car could overpower the rear tires with the slightest blip on the throttle. The first of these high-performance cars was built in 1964. Three versions of the engine were available, the base having 350 bhp,

the second featuring a higher lift cam and 360 bhp, and the third the Ram Air II option with improved heads and hood cold-air feed, giving 366 bhp. It’s a 1968 Pontiac GTO. “Put a tiger in your tank.” If you would like information about

disease impacts every aspect of daily life. As an Alzheimer’s patient loses one ability after another, caregivers face tests of stamina, problem-solving and resiliency. During this long and diffi cult journey,

communication

diminishes, rewards decrease, and without strong support, caretakers face challenges to their own well-being. Preparing and protecting

yourself, working to understand your loved one’s experience, and embracing help from others can help to minimize the hazards and enhance the joys of your caregiving experience. Learning all you can about what is happening and what to expect not only helps your loved one, it is the fi rst step towards protecting your own total

health. Our group has two highly qualifi ed facilitators who have extensive knowledge on how to care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease. This month they will update you on current Alzheimer’s events. There will be a sharing time by members on what is happening in their lives and the challenges they are

currently experiencing. Please know you are not alone. Come to

our next meeting

on April 9th from 9:30am to 11:30am. Bring your questions and be prepared to learn something new. Following the meeting, some of the members go to lunch at Eagle’s Nest to

get to know each other better. For questions and location of

the meeting, please contact Rayma Scalzo at raymas@cox.net or call her at 623-935-1819. Hope to see you there.

Janice Sandberg

Priscilla Naworski Janice

Sandberg volunteers at the

Mission of Mercy Mobile Medical Clinic from November through April. Tell us about the organization. I volunteer at the Mission of Mercy

Mobile Medical Clinic, staffed by doctors, nurses, physician’s assistants, and lay volunteers. The clinic’s mission is to provide medical services to the uninsured or under- insured at fi ve different sites in Maricopa County. Are special clothes or qualifi cations

needed? No special clothing is required for the

job. There is a special need for bilingual interpreters. Distance to the site? I travel approximately fi ve miles. How were you trained? Jeanne Karnell, R.N., the site coordinator,

trained me in accuracy and confi dentiality in dealing with medical records and in interviewing patients. What are your duties? I volunteer on each of the three Mondays the mobile unit

a month that is present.

My duties are to greet and register clients. Patients usually come to us after all other options have been exhausted. For most, it is their fi rst time seeking help on a charitable basis. How did you learn about this job? I learned about this volunteer

opportunity at my church. I told them that I was a part-time resident and was told that it would be okay as the summer months are not busy. What is interesting, fun, and meaningful

about the job? The fun part of this job is meeting and

working with the wonderful professionals and lay volunteers. I appreciate the patients
