Glastonbury Chapter of UNiCo, including three years as president, and was named the chapter’s UNiCAN of the year in 2002. He has been involved with Glastonbury Amateur Baseball coaching the sport at several levels, in addition to coaching youth track and basketball. He has organized fundraising drives for various groups and has worked with Friends in need of Special Help (FiSH), driving Glastonbury-area seniors unable to drive themselves to medical appointments. Pavano was inducted into the New Britain


(Conn.) High School Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978, and the Patron of youth Club at the Glastonbury Family yMCA. Now retired, he and his wife, Alvera,


enjoy traveling with their children and grandchildren.

Lou Howard ’48 Lou Howard had a great deal of success as a high school football coach on Long island, beginning at Amityville High School in 1953. in fact, Howard never had a losing


season in his coaching career. He won nine consecutive league championships, starting with his first season as a head coach. That feat has never been duplicated in more than 70 years of Long island high school football. Howard was the


only high school coach ever to be inducted into the Long island Sports Hall of Fame. He is


also a National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame coach. Amityville High School has its field named in his honor. Howard, over the years, has been a much


sought-after motivational speaker. He has authored three books, including a football textbook. But Howard is much more than a football


coach. He was declared one of the 100 Most influential People of the 20th Century in Babylon, N.y. He is armed with a doctorate in aerospace technology, having helped develop

State University of New york at Farmingdale’s aerospace program and serving as its first chairman. He wrote a textbook to teach pilots how


to fly the instrument landing system and was appointed to serve on a federal advisory committee to help design the first space shuttle for NASA. To commemorate the 50th anniversary


of Charles Lindbergh’s famous transatlantic flight, Howard retraced the pilot’s journey, landing in LeBourget Field just outside of Paris. Howard also had a successful career in


politics, serving as Amityville trustee and mayor, a presiding officer of Suffolk County, and a New york State assemblyman. He and his wife still live in Amityville.


Emerson W. Dunton Jr. ’56


Emerson Dunton has made the sport of gymnastics a lifelong avocation, and it all started at Springfield College. in the mid-1950s, Dunton was a fixture on


the Springfield College exhibition gymnastics team. in 1956, he was a co-captain and earned the team’s Most Valuable Gymnast, Most outstanding Achievement, and Coaches awards. He was also the Varsity “S” Club President.


Since then, he has been a loyal staple for every gymnastics team reunion committee. Since his days at Springfield College,


Dunton has proven to be a successful coach at several high schools, including at Freehold High School in New Jersey for 34 years, at Newfield High School in Selden, N.y., for 15 years, and at Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham, Mass., for two years. His teams were


state champions in New Jersey in 1958 and 1959, in Massachusetts in


1961, and in New york in 1976 and 1977. Dunton won the National High School


Gymnastics Association Coaching Award in 1977, 1990, 1991, and 1992. He also earned the New york State Gymnastics officials


25-year Service Award in 1992. From 1968 to the present, he developed


and ran the island Gymnastic Summer Camp, doing so for more than 40 years. From 1973 to the present, he developed and ran Dunton’s island Gymnastics Schools. Dunton was also the founder and


president of the New york State officials Association, and founded the Suffolk County officials Association. Because of the amount of projects chaired


and money raised for gymnastics, “all followers of Springfield College gymnastics owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Emerson Dunton,” said his former coach Frank Wolcott. “He was the best of the best of his time in New England.”


Kenneth H. Klatka ’69, G’70


Mention Springfield College track and field, and Ken Klatka automatically comes to mind. Klatka’s name has been synonymous with the Springfield College track and field program for 46 years, serving as the head men’s coach for the past 35 years, since 1977. in that time


frame, Klatka has proven to be one of the more successful


track and field coaches in the nation, winning at a 75 percent clip. in addition, Klatka has meant so much


more to Springfield College as he has fulfilled many capacities. Most importantly, he has been an associate professor of physical education since 1970. As a performer, Klatka was a captain of the


Springfield College cross country team in 1969, setting several course records. He also became the intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America champion before going on to finish seventh at the nationals that year. Klatka has been well decorated throughout


his career. He has been named the NCAA Division iii outdoor Regional Coach of the year three times, the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division ii outdoor Coach of the year four times, the NCAA Division ii indoor
